Wouldn't they have been "naturally selected" out by now?

... Seriously, I'm not hating, I'm just curious.

For those of you suggesting population control - you may want to check out Anthony Burgess's "The Wanting Seed" about homosexuality becomming preferred by society as a means of population control. He is also the author of "A Clockwork Orange"

Indeed, prefering a behavior that will not create children
does seem pretty counter-evolutionary, doesn't it?

Some theories suggest that homosexuality is a species
method of population control. That is, the genetic base
is generally protecting itself by trying not to expand beyond
the available resources.

Other theories suggest that having non-procreational
adults around to help with child care and provide for the
family is an evolutionary win.

In either case, the PARTICULAR genes in question don't
win, but the family that produced them recessively did.

I'm not sure how up you are on genetics, but at this point,
scientists are looking at evolution as much more complex
than only taking survival information from the individual.

Evolution can only select from that which it has the opportunity to select from. Without more knowledge of what causes it, it's mere speculation as to why it happens.

Why do people have appendixes? Why vestigal tails? Why so many back problems? The answer to all these types of questions must be an imperfect process. That's no problem for evolution, because no-one claims it's perfect. It does pose a problem for ID proponents though, and this is the real reason they refuse to even consider the possibility that homosexuality actually is genetic rather than a "choice".

Considering that it they can not reproduce, then by the theory of evolution it's a birth defect and will eventually be extinct...but no homosexual or evolutionist is going to buy this even though they believe it for everything else...

The truth is, it's a choice and UC Berkley in Northern California (the most liberal college in the world) found that there are brain pattern differences between hetero and homosexuals. But they concluded that they weren't born with these differences, rather it happened after the person decided to, for lack of a better word, go gay.

So evolutionary theory and a wordly college has found some major loop holes in the idea of gay by birth, but they'd never admit it because that means they would have to face the truth and realize that it's a choice.

This is really a biology question, you'll get different answers here than you would there but there have been scientific studies to this question.

The real answer is, no one knows, mutations happen all the time, and the vast majority of them either don't effect the organism or actually harm it, very very few are beneficial.

I can't remember the source of the paper but a current hypothesis goes like this. Homo sapiens, as animals who live in family groups, actually benefit as a population from individuals that don't actively try to breed their own offspring. Basically, until very recently human families lived in large extended families, by your parents having a gay sibling, your uncle could actively hunt and gather for your family group, take care of you and your brothers/sisters/cousins, and generally promote the welfare of the family line without adding additional stresses to it (more children). By making it easier for their families offspring to survive to adulthood and procreate on their own, gay individuals could in fact, pass on their genes through their siblings.

As weird as it may sound, a lot of animals who live in groups operate in this exact manner. It is almost always the alpha males and females who are allowed to mate and breed offspring, while the rest of the group supports the children of the alphas.

It has nothing to do with evolution. For one thing - With as many stupid teens having bastard children, gays can adopt and raise the kids in loving homes. (Other wise these kids would have been aborted or ended up in a dumpster - Now there's your population control)

If you recall correctly men were butt ******* as far back as the Greeks and Romans - And look how many people are around today!

It has nothing to do with evolution b/c if you watch male monkeys, especially those small monkeys (the ones people like to keep as pets)- they butt ****. I think it has to do with hormones and domination. Maybe it's just fun. I don't know.

Honestly, I don't think this whole gay thing is up for debate b/c no one can prove what causes people to be gay (chemicals in the brain or is it a choice?).

Population control. It's a scientifically studied fact that in nature when a species overpopulates an area and that area can no longer sustain the numbers then there is more and more recorded homosexual behaviour in that species.

Evolution is NOT completely true... Homosexuals exist because Satan is trying to turn everyone from the straight and narrow path to the broad, destructive path, and in the minds of people, when they start feeling a certain way (especially sexually/passionately) it is SUPER hard to overcome... Satan enticed good people, entertained them with ideas of homosexuality, sent people to tell them that was an OK lifestyle and they fell... (BTW, I'm not saying "I hate homosexuals" b/c I don't...One of my best friends is gay, so don't say I'm hating...)

Perhaps homosexuality is nature's way of preventing overpopulation. If that is the case, then they wouldn't be naturally selected out by now because there is still a need for them.

Evolution is a myth. The world was actually created when a giant space turtle puked it up, people and all, about 10000 years ago.

I know this is true because I read it in a book. I always believe everything I read. After all, if someone put it in a book they couldn't possibly be making it up. DUhHHh!

Humans aren't "naturally selected" anymore. Medicine has helped with a lot of that.

It's a valid question, but I don't have an answer. I applaud your curiosity! :)

It occurrs in all species, but since homosexuals don't typically "breed", it seems the gay gene is likely random and not a trait passed down from generation to generation.

It would be interesting to see how many gay men who do have children, have gay children.
