A friend of my mum's is giving me a part time (Saturday) job, starting next week in her hairdressing salon as what she jokingly called a Saturday Girl (but she said I could her her Saturday Boy :) ).

My mum said it involved lots of sweeping up hair, doing laundry and stuff and maybe washing people's hair. Is that it? It doesn't sound too exciting, but I have to earn some money to pay off something I broke and I am struggling to get a job any where else.

I think the Saturday Girl thing was just a play on a Girl Friday. A Girl Friday is basically just someone who does chores for someone (like a secretary, but answering the phone less and doing errands more). The tasks that your mom described are probably right on the money.

She's just making a joke based on the "Man Friday" or "Girl Friday
term, which is basically just an odd-job girl. You'll basically be in charge of doing whatever odds and ends need to be done around the place, including the stuff your mom listed. You'll be an assistant.

Yeah, you're just going to be doing grunt work, random chores, "other duties as assigned". It actually sounds like a good way to make a little money since you owe some. I'd definitely take it and be glad it's with someone I know.
