If the Akai remote is for a TV or something other than a dvd player and it has a way to select "dvd player", then you should be able to find a code for it to use. Most manuals have programming info and manufacturer specific codes. If you don't have the manual, then you'll have to try and find it online to see how to program it. (or maybe someone with knowledge can respond)

If it's an Akai DVD remote, then no. It's pre-programmed to only work with the player it came with. If you're lucky it may be programmed with the same code or one close to it, but there's dozens of completely different codes, so it's unlikely.

Buy a universal remote. They cost $6.00 at Walmart.
