This is an opinion poll. I've seen some comments about Intelligent Design that are just inconsistant with what I understand it to be. I'm not asking for my own knowledge, but to gauge the "opinion" of the participants here. Please try to refrain from sarcasm. Otherwise, let's see what you all think.

Ok, so you've all expressed your political views....now what is the DEFINITION of Intelligent Design? None of these answers provide that.

Definition: Intelligent Design states that life is so complicated that there must have been a designer.

Personal Opinion: It is(quoth Scientific Americans Antigravity columns) "the fullblown intellectual surrender strategy."
P.S.(to The Yeti) Nice work!

Imagine there is a girl, let's call her Miss. Creationism, and she likes to get around a bit. There was a time when all the boys wanted her. But she got old and the boys fancied other things, like Miss Evolution down the road.

This made Miss Creationism very sad. Then one day a man who couldn't get in with Miss Evolution came by Miss Creationism. He said he could make all the boys like Miss Creationism again. And so he started to put make up on Miss Creationism, push up her boobs and put on high heals, enough so that she still looked like herself but had a few things that the boys liked about Miss Evolution.

Just as Miss Creationism was about to leave the house to go to and find some boys the man stopped her and said "Wait, they'll still know you as Miss Creationism. You need a new identity, something that sounds like Miss Evolution but is still quintessentialy you" he frowned and stroked his beard in concentration. He snapped his fingers and looked up with a smile "Miss Inteligent Design!".

And ever since she has been pretending that she is the equal to Miss Evolution but in actual fact she is just a tarted up old hag.

"Authors of the highest eminence seem to be fully satisfied with the view that each species has been independently created. To my mind it accords better with what we know of the laws impressed on matter by the Creator, that the production and extinction of the past and present inhabitants of the world should have been due to secondary causes, like those determining the birth and death of the individual."

"There is a granduer in this view of life, with its several powers, having been originally breathed by the Creator into a few forms or into one;"

Quotes of Charles Darwin - Origin of the Species

Even Darwin knew there was a Creator

Intelligent Design (ID) is a speculation or statement that the complex systems existing in nature could not appear as result of natural evolution, but must be designed by a being or creature not belonging to the nature.

The proponents of ID normally speculate specifically about living creatures (a fly, a human, an ape), but not about structure of other complex systems (e.g. galaxies, mountains with caves, rivers etc). The ‘ID’ is a pure speculation, in sense that it had not provided any specific knowledge, e.g. distribution of elements in universe, evolution of species, neurobiological mechanisms or whatever branch of knowledge – the ‘ID’ ignores current state of human experience and knowledge about the world, quite similarly to any religious myth.

The ‘ID’ speculation is vigorously rejected by scientific community, similarly to many other ‘crackpot’ speculations that are not based on any facts, internally contradictive and do not provide any prediction or any possibility to be tested.

Scientists researched for long time different mechanisms of self-organization and evolution and a lay person may understand frustration of scientific community caused by aggressive ignorance of ‘ID’ proponents.

In my own opinion ‘ID’ is somewhat similar to speculations about flat Earth, or Sun rotating around the Earth, or Sun being center of Universe. Such speculations are natural to appear when there is no any knowledge of the subject, but it is unforgivable when there is already knowledge, tools and experience, - but a crackpot just ignores all that.

Of course, a crackpot points around to eagerly show that Earth is flat, points to Sun ‘rotating’ around and hotly brings your attention to the facts that stars are ‘just shining dots’ compared to Sun – I think all of this is exact analogy of the ‘ID’ speculations.

P.S. To Yeti and elitetrooper459 - nice to read you!

Something of higher intelligence created life and the universe as we know it.

Intelligent design is just another form of creationism, where the explicit statement of god being the designer has been removed.

"Intelligent Design" is a version of creationism designed to evade the Constitutional ban on establishment of religion by masquerading as science (Kitzmiller vs. Dover, 2005).

Intelligent Design is mythology and religion masquerading as science.
It is of course, nothing of the sort as it has NO testable or falsifiable hypothesis.
It's just another example of Pious Fraud.

It's my opinion that ID Came about because the religious community has realized that they could no longer dismiss the reality of Evolution.
