Most of the time, it's just an attempt to try to prove superiority over someone else. Or at the very least get a sense of superiority over someone else.

We should all know by now that there are very few people on blogs or message boards or anything else that strive to be proper in their typing and spelling. As long as most people with half a brain can understand the point, it doesn't matter if the grammar or spelling is good.

I don't know. Why are so many people ignorant regarding proper spelling, grammar, sentence structure, and the correct use of words? We are supposed to be an educated society, yet it certainly does not show! For example: "they are always correcting somebody?" is a statement -- not a question. Also, sentences start with a capital letter!

Speaking with poor grammar and writing with incorrect spelling makes people look less intelligent. I don't think that these "English professors" are doing anything wrong.

Formal writing and formal speech is something that we can all do to make ourselves seem intelligent. It's a good thing to have people help correct our mistakes.

I'm a certified English teacher, but I only correct somebody if they seem to want that. However, if I use the same word somebody else has misspelled, I'll spell it correctly.

Well, if you grew up in an English speaking country, you should have learned proper grammar and spelling in school. So you have no excuse.

If English isn't your first language, you should be happy to be corrected, it's how you learn.

And I agree with the fact that this is all for the most part for our entertainment and fun. The biggest share of us..KNOW...there is a spell check..just right above what we are typing....and most of us are trying to get our point out quicker, faster and better than everyone else...it's all the competitive nature of most humans.

"Why are there people who think they are a professor of the English language? Why are they always correcting everybody?"

That sounds a bit better.

We're just frustrated that we were required to pass English to graduate from high school ... it seems that some people were screwing their teachers in the broom closet to get by.

I would assume it is because smart people that know the language are trying to help the slow people that don't get it very well.
