It depends on range and bullet placement. Power falls off as range increases. And the round must hit the vitals to make a clean kill.
I don't have a power scale close by so ball palk muzzle energies:
Small game 0-400 ft/lbs
Medium: 400-1000 ft/lbs
Big game: 900-up ft/lbs

Any caliber from 1,000 ft. lbs works good for deer sized animals, however, I am afraid it is way overkill for rabbits. You are not going to find an all around hunting gun for large and small game. This usually requires a separate gun for each category of game (although some will argue differently). Smaller calibers for small game and large for large. Good hunting !

Most people say around 1,000 ft-lbs for white-tailed deer. Elk will be a little more, and rabbits can be killed with accurate .22LR or .22mag rounds.
The most important thing in shooting isn't energy(not to downplay that factor). It is shot placement. Hitting the animal in the kill zone with enough energy produces a clean, humane kill.

Depends on how much the bullet weighs, a 50 grain .223 bullet going at 3500 FPS still isn't going to be adequate for deer. A 400 Grain 45/75 Government going at 800 FPS is very adequate for medium size bear even..
