When you answser the phone and realize it is a computer begin hitting the # or the * button numerous times.......it messes up the system and they will quit calling soon enough!

It needs to be stopped at the other end. It sounds like either

(a) someone is using dial-up internet at your house when you pick up the phone
(b) someone is trying to send a fax to you

Sounds more like (b) than (a). I don't know of anything you can do at your end. Just change your fax number to the correct one if you have one posted(ie. business cards), or let people know about your new fax number or lack of one.

use caller id to identify the number, then use call block to send a busy signal whenever that number tries to dial yours.

Put a call in to the Do-Not-Call Registry and register your phone number.

There are devices like the telezapper that automatically detects if a call was sent by a machine, and will block the call for you.

Put yout phone in the Do-not disturb and register your telephone no. to the company
