I want to play volleyball (either at club level or varsity level) but I am not sure if it is possible to have a strenuous major and play a sport.

It depends how disciplined you are. It is quite doable to play a varsity sport and complete an engineering degree, but its not possible to do that and go to all the parties and social events one often associates with college.
If you don't think you have the self-discipline to do both, consider intra-mural sports. Its not nearly as competitive, but you're not practicing all the time either.

Sure.. But like one mentioned. You must discipline yourself. ME? I don't play sports. Well, I do, but not anymore. I'm working on a double major. 1 in Aerospace Engineering and 2. Business Admin in Aviation. I have no time what-so-ever to even think about playing baseball... my beloved sport. I wish I could, but I have to stay focused on my objective. And doing so-- I will succeed because of my dedication toward my interests. Which in turn, supplies the motivation for which my self-discipline carries my intentions on an accelerated path.

I know of a mid 30's graduate that found a way to manage a triple major and football. It took 9 years, but hey! He sure did play the sport well, and is now working for NASA.

I know I won't make it into the MLB. Therefore, I won't even attempt to interupt my flow of study with something so time consuming. I'm going to be here for 5 more years. That alone is enough to juggle.

Good luck to you. :)~

It is extremely hard! But is it possible. My roommate is a Chemical Engineering major (and minoring in math, chemistry, biology and Criminal Justice) and she is a diver. She has a natural abibity to pick up practically any subject you throw at her. So for her it is possible. I know it would be hard for me (I am a civil engineering major and I am minoring in math) since I am really involved in 3 other clubs.

Good luck though if this is what you want to do! Being an athlete in college can take a lot out of you! My roommate had her practices really early in the morning before all of her classes (6am) and in the afternoon. It is possible, but hard.

It's been done...not often. However, if you're asking the question, you probably don't have the capacity (brains) to do it. Anyone who did, would know it. You can always try it, and if you find your studies are being impacted, just drop the sport. Trust me, it won't get better. Engineering does not get easier with time. But volley ball does not sound quite as demanding as, say, football, basketball, or other major sports.

Yes, one person in my Thermo class is an offensive lineman on the football team (Big 10 school as well.) Also, an NFL player just drafted to the 49ers in the 1st round this year, Manny Lawson, majored in Industrial Engineering. Engineering is tough as it is, but it's certainly possible to do both and still excel but you obviously have to work very hard.

I'm sure it can be done. I graduated with a fellow who was a middle linebacker on a national champioship football team. It doesn't get much tougher than that.

It took him an extra two semesters to finish but you only live once so why not give it a try.

I am a Mechanical Engineering major and yes it is. Some of my friends who share my major have played football our last four years of college and they have done just fine. Just don't loose sight of what's most important.
