My room is 80 degrees and my parakeets are panting. I have a fan blowing in their direction, two windows open, and the shades drawn, but my room is still so hot. I sprayed them with cold water, and I think that helped, but my questions is: Can I put some ice cubes in the cage in a bowl? Will that help? I feel so bad for them! I need an air conditioner! But as for now, can I do the ice cube thing, and does anybody have any tips to keep them cooler without an AC?

As a veterinary student, who will be an avian specialist dvm, I can assure you that ice cubes and the fans will not hurt your birds.
Let's think logically. If the room is 85 degrees and you have a fan blowing the air around, what temperature is the air that is blowing around? Is it not also 85 degrees? Hello, that is not a cold draft!
I don't think it's necessary to blow the fans right on them... But to circulate the air in the room? No problem!
Ice cubes in the water ~ excellent relief for a hot bird. Why do you all think the birds jump in their water dishes and bathe as soon as you fill them up with ice cold water out of the tap? They LOVE it!
You are doing all the right things. Parakeets are tropical birds. My Dad grew up in Puerto Rico, where he caught parakeets in his yard and kept them in big outdoor cages. He was not trying to rescue them and put them in air conditioning!
They will be fine. They pant because that's the only way they can release heat from their bodies. It is a perfectly healthy way to do it ~ and shows that nature is at work.
Keep the fans on, give them ice as you like. My brother puts ice cubes in his bird's (a conure) water dish every day ~ he says his bird likes to "play Titanic." Truly, his conure gets upset and shouts at him if he forgets the ice!
Have a great day!

Parakeets are a tropical bird so I don't think you have to worry too much about them. I don't think I would do the ice cube bit. You could put a bowl of cool water in the cage as they do like to bathe. Just make sure they have plenty of water available and they will be okay.

Don't use air conditioning it will make them very ill as their nostrils are really sensitive. But I think the ice cube idea is OK so that they have fresh cold water. Try giving them showers once or twice a day. Some parrots love showers, mine loves them as I also live in a hot climate. It refreshes them alot. If their not tame budgies then put a bowl in the bottom of their cage for them to bath themselves in, its like a bird bath.

My mom does this for my keets in the summer. She will wet a cover sheet or just a blanket and soak it with cold water. Then she will drain the water so no water drips on the keets and she will place the sheet on top of their cage. So it is nice cold and dark when they go back into their cages after playing for hours outside.
Also do not blow the fan straight on them..have it rotate so air goes on them once in a while.
Someone also said keets are tropical birds..yes they are but if they are panting then what the owner wants to do is right...i mean not the ice cubes but fix the problem someother way.
Good luck and have fun with them..it's nice to hear you care about them...=)

In my adventure, parakeets do greater effective in even numbers with an equivalent male to woman ratio so as that they are able to variety pairs. in case you recognize your parakeets gender, try in straightforward terms getting between the different gender. objective for comparable length and age if in any respect available. And sure, in case you probably did no longer improve the cage, the unique parakeet would sense that his area is being intruded upon. Get a clean, better cage, and introduce the recent and unique parakeet to it on the comparable time. there is a few bickering in the beginning up, yet except there is unquestionably injury being performed, enable them to establish themselves in the previous you do something. even nonetheless, if all people is being rather aggressive and harming the different, separate them at recent.

TURN OFF THE FAN!!! NO ICE CUBES!!! Parakeets will die quickly if chilled!!!! Parakeets are tropical birds and well used to heat. The draught from the fan can do more harm than good! Changes in temperatures can be fatal! PLEASE TURN IT OFF!! Just place a shallow bath of tepid water for them to bathe in, should they want to. You can spray them with TEPID water,NOT COLD!! Keep fresh clean water available, changing frequently. NO FANS, NO ICE CUBES!!

You seem to be off to a good start - try putting cold water into their water bowl, so they can have something to cool off with. I'm not sure there's much else you can do. If they get in too bad of shape, you might want to take them to a relative or friend's house that has air conditioning... or take them to the vet.
