the OTC (over the counter) stuff is not that effective, and it can take several doses, which can and has led to an over-dose.

i would take your pup to the vet....its a simply inexpensive medication. they will give by mouth, and over the next few days the pup will poop out all the worms.
your pup may feel a bit sleepy, and inactive for a day or two. but its MUCH better for them to be de-wormed.

don't worry about you getting the worms...it is possible...but HIGHLY unlikely!

call a few vets and tell them how old your pup is, and that he needs to be de-wormed, get prices and shop around till you find a vet you are comfortable with and are okay with the prices.
ALSO!!! PLEASE have your pups shots done too!!! esp. Rabies and Parvo
a parvo shot can run around $12-$15 dollars...NOT EXPENSIVE! but if you pup GETS parvo...it can run you $1500-$2000, to treat him!
a Rabies shot is around $8-$15...again dogs with Rabies usually are not "savable" and are most likely going to have to be euthanized.
its a worth while investment so get the shots.
also get a heart worm prevention. heart worms are carried by mosquitos. a 6 month supply of heart worm prevention is around $20-$30.

pups are fun...but they need ALL their shots if you want a healthy pet.

You can deworm the pup with over the counter wormer. Yes you could get them in pretty much the same way you could get anything else. Meaning playing with puppy and not washing your hands prior to eating. This is a zoonotic condition, meaning that humans can be affected by it also. If the puppy looks like his stomach is swolen, pretty good chance of worms. The dewormer will kill the worms, and the pup will pass them in their stool. Iams canned puppy food mixed in with the dry, will help keep some weight on the pup if the worms were really bad. Good Luck.

Go to the pet/feed store in your area and get Pyrantel Pamoate suspension.. This is what the vet will use.as it will kill both roundworms these you can see - look like spagetti & hookworms - can't see - microscoptic. Your dog is too young to have whipworm or heartworm.

Follow directions. Repeat every 2 weeks until 16 weeks old.

Besides worming, your pup NEEDS vaccines. You are due for a well puppy visit. So, start finding your dogs doctor now. Tell him if you have already wormed puppy.

ps - worms are transmitable and you can catch them. Don't let an unwormed puppy lick you in the mouth. The transmission is fecal to oral. He licks his "privates" & licks your mouth... you can see where this goes.

And pick up any poops from this puppy. Hookworm eggs can live in the soil for years.

Yes, you can get worms from your puppy, but it is transferred by thier stool. As long as you wash your hands, and everything that comes in contact with the stool, you should be OK. Be especially carefull with kids though, keep them away from the feces and be careful to pick it up from the yard. Your vet should get your pup on a deworming schedule. My vet recommends deworming every other week until they are 16 weeks. He also recommends using a heartworm preventative once a month, because they also kill worms. So you can give a dewormer like Drontal now, in two weeks give a Heartgard or Intercepter, two weeks later a dewormer, two weeks later heartworm preventative, etc. until the pup is 16 weeks, then continue with the heartworm pills once a month for the rest of his life.

Sal's answer was very good! It is possible to get worms from your dog or cat, and a vet can tell you which one(s) he has with a sample. Your pup needs to be seen by a vet anyway, to see if there is anything else he might have. Worms can kill him. Wash your hands, and anything that puppy's behind has touched. Good luck.

Your vet can get you the medicine he needs to get rid of them. My pup got worms and I didn't even have to take him in, I just called the vet and picked up the medicine.

Almost all puppies get worms and if they are treated its not a big deal. I don't know if you can get them, I don't see how you could unless you were extremely careless.

You need to get your pup to the vet ASAP to get him dewormed.

And yes, you can contract the worms if you're not careful. Make sure you thoroughly wash your hands after handling the puppy.

You and other pets can get roundworms by eating the feces, call your vet, make an appt, get a fecal sample, and they can determine the type of worms and proper medication. Make sure you wash your hands real well after handling the pup

Your pup is very young, I would take him to a vet to be wormed. If you wash your hands after handling your pet you should be fine.

You can de-worm him.
Or take him to a vet.
Preferably, a vet.
He needs it done, or he can die.
It is possible for people to get them, yes.
I don't know how though.
