It depends on what you want for a career. Money is better at drafter/designer job. Surveying field crew is an outside work environment (sport activity).

It depends on how you want to spend your days. I am actually a Mechanical Engineering student, but I have worked on a surveying crew the last few summers. It is very interesting and a great learning experience, plus you get to spend all your days outdoors. But it is hard work and you usually don't get to see the incentive for your hard work until you get your surveyors license which may take up to 8 years depending on your state. So if you like the outdoors and are looking for a change, do it. One thing that will help is that after 7+ years of drafting experience, you should have a good enough knowledge of trigonometry to excel in the field. My personal experience in the last past summers has been great, but, I like the air conditioning.

Would you rather be out in the heat and cold or in front of a computer screen? These jobs don't sound like they're a natural progression from one to the other, so what is making you think of the change?
