i can't open an icon on my new mini mac that i downloaded! help?

i am a new user of a mini mac. the icons on my desktop are grey and are not looking like real icons. the download manager says that it was comletely downloaded and it shows in the application display. but nothing opens or shows anything. i am grateful for any simple advice. i am ok with my pc (window) but my daughter got the mac and we trying to figure it out!

Just a shot in the dark, but for a lot of stuff, you have to have Stuffit Expander (free) installed.

Can you supply us with a screenshot or something? And what do you mean by "application display"?
