My husband needs to see the doctor for bleeding and unusual bowel movements. I'm sure he needs to see a specialist, but I'm not sure what type of doctor this would be.

GI, gastroenterologist. You may need a referral from your prime care doctor though for insurance purposes. Check with your insurance company if you are unsure or you could end up with a bill.
Oh, just so you know the difference, a GI doctor deals with disorders of the digestive system-"start to finish". A proctologist deals with disorders of the colon and rectal areas.

First go to a primary care dr, or family practice dr, or internal medicine dr. They will determine whether or not he needs to see a specialist. Most can treat their patients without seeing a specialist. They also know the best ones available.

Gastroenterologist. (Specialist of the gastrointestinal system.)
But he can start out seeing an internist or his regular physician who can refer him.

Best wishes.
