I have an 11 month old daughter who picks up quickly on things but has a short attention span. What is a good way to teach her things such as gestures and words like up and down or how to recognize parts of a face (i.e. nose, lips, eyes, etc) as well as colors and shapes?

We read together and play with toys such as different shaped blocks that have different colors and things of that nature but I was wondering if there was anything more I could do

The best way to teach an 11 month old is to interact with her regularly. She will have a short attention span at that age and variety is key. If you sing silly songs with her while she plays or even when you are cooking dinner etc that will her her remember colours and names of body parts etc. Even when she is colouring or drawing try and reinforce things like...what colour is that? show me the pink one..etc.

Good luck.....and don't panic about trying to teach her too much too soon. She will learn at her own pace and will be fine.

PS.....I am a teacher...so I kinda know what Im on about! Hope this helps

You could make your own flash cards from bright pictures from magazines and family photos. Write on it what the object/ person is so that it's specific to her. Sing songs with actions to them and generally let her help. My daughter used to count the nappies etc with me. Just talk all the time showing colours etc, girls are very good at picking up language. My daughter got into a private school at 4 and has come top of her class in Uni.

Singing songs is an excellent way of teaching counting, colours shapes, parts of the body and so much more. A really good book with excellent song in is a puffin book called "My little puffin". I used it as part of my traing as a nursery nurse and still use it now to get ideas of songs to sing. Finger rhymes are especially good for children who lose interest quickly as they need visual aids to keep their interest. Most importantly keep learning fun. Children learn more when they are having fun!!!!!

With the help of books and puppets, both of which you can check out for free at most libraries. At her age, you want to stick with very simple puppets (have them talk to her, believe it or not they can influence her almost better than you if she has a good imagination) and board books. Most board books are designed specifically for what you've asked about! Babies have VERY short attention spans, so this is normal. She looses focus BECAUSE she's smart, not the opposite.

my ten month old understands the command "bite my nose". We learnt this through repitition. She also knows "follow me" and "no". repition repition reptition. No matter how boring you think it might me, for her it is a great game. don't try to teach her lots of stuff all at once, just one thing at a time when she gets the hang of it move onto the next idea.

read them bed time stories, decent music before bed. use picture book to familiarize them with the things that you think might be useful. then take him/her to show the real thing and see how they interact (read fascial exp if they show any) to the things they have seen before in the picture book.
the bottom line is they are inconsciously aware of their surroundings and are learning every seconds. their brain works many times more than ours. dont just let it idle on useless things.

Don't mean to sound rude, but if you already read, play and sing with her - leave her alone! She's a baby! She'll develop in her own time. Any pressure will just stress her out and make her unhappy.

Just repetition. She might not show that she's listening, but she's taking it all in. It's amazing the things they pick up that you never even realised they were paying attention to.
