There are two major types of alcohol methanol and ethanol. Also, there's isopropanol, which is rubbing alcohol. Ethanol is the one in alcoholic beverages. There's a great explanation of this on Wikipedia. I've put a link to it under "Sources".

the alcohol is produced by a reaction between the sugars in the drink and some other ingredient such as yeast. chemically speaking the alcohol in a drink is no different from pure ethanol or rubbing alcohol (that is if the particular rubbing alcohol is made of ethanol and not one of the other alcohols)

Its more like what cars are going to be running on soon.
Ethanol (CH3CH2OH), the active ingredient in alcoholic beverages, is almost always produced by fermentation - the metabolism of carbohydrates by certain species of yeast in the absence of oxygen. The process of culturing yeast under alcohol-producing conditions is referred to as brewing.
It has been suggested that alcoholic impurities (congeners) are the cause of hangovers. However, it is more likely that they are caused by ethanal, a toxic breakdown intermediate naturally produced by the liver as the alcohol is metabolised.
Alcoholic beverages with a concentration of more than 50% ethanol by volume (100 proof) are flammable liquids and easily ignited. Some exotic beverages gain their distinctive flavors through intentional ignition of the drink, such as the Flaming Dr. Pepper or the Fiery Blue Mustang.
It should be noted that in chemistry, alcohol is a general term for any organic compound in which a hydroxyl group (-OH) is bound to a carbon atom, which in turn is bound to other carbon atoms and further hydrogens. Other alcohols such as propylene glycol and the sugar alcohols may appear in food or beverages regularly, but these alcohols do not make them "alcoholic".

Rubbing alcohol is totally different from drinking alcohol.
Drinking alcohol is made of fermented (left out and aged) fruit or grains. You shouldn't do it at home without reading about what NOT to do because alot of people have died from making the stuff wrong.

They put something in rubbing alcohol to make it poisonous so if you drink it it will hurt you. They do this so people will not drink it. Alcoholics drink it out of despiration sometimes and develop very serious health consequences. If you want to drink just purchase cheap alchohol that is meant for drinking. Do not drink rubbing alcohol it will really hurt you.

Drinking alcohol is made of ethanol, while rubbing alcohol is usually denatured alcohol, or iso-propyl alcohol. I believe they are similar in chemical structure, but because of the way both are processed, rubbing alcohol is not suitable for drinking because it has tons of impurities that can make you blind, or sick.

Ethanol. No, rubbing alcohol is isopropanol. Cleaning fluids are methanol. Don't drink either of the last two.
