If the person got a purple heart, they probably got some sort of expeditionary medal too. That entitles you to at least 2 years of very very cheap medical care at any VA medical facility. I didn't even go to Iraq when I was in the Navy, but everyone on my ship got a Global War on Terror expeditionary medal, and I get my 2 years of VA medical benefits. And also what the other person said about burial and a casket. You also get a bronze grave marker.

Getting a purple heart is one of the highest awards you can receive. and the benefit is the honor and the pride the medal warrants. but getting a purple heart means your probably disabled. you will get VA compensation pay but you don't need a purple heart for that, if your disability was caused or aggravated by your military service, in war time or peace time, you can file for va compensation and you get that for the rest of your life.
