They're dark brown but lay little white eggs that look like dandruff. If your (or someone else's) head itches a lot and feels like it's being bitten by tiny things, check for little dark brown bugs. They look similar to fleas only they can't really jump. Go to CVS and get this stuff called NIX or something. Lice is extremely hard to get rid of but not altogether impossible. It just takes a lot of work and you can't slack off or else they'll keep coming back. Good luck!

There are nits (or eggs) and then there are full grown bugs. You can see the bugs. The eggs are white and attach to the hair, look alot like dandruff. If you pull the hair strand taut and "flick" the egg and it comes off, it is dandruff. If you have to take your nail and scrape it off more than likely it is lice. Lice like to feed in the nape area or hair above the neckline or behind the ears. If lice is found, be sure to treat it. You must comb Rid or another lice removing agent through each section of the hair. If you have to do this, the easiest way is to start in the neck area. Pull all the hair up using rubber bands or clips and release a quarter inch section of hair at a time combing the solution from the scap to the ends of the hair. Comb on top and underneath the section of hair, this makes sure the solution covers each hair and scraps off any eggs. You will want to use a Lice removing agent on your furniture and bedding also. Hope this helps.

I used to check for lice at a camp for about 5 years. The actual lice are white and cling to the hair shaft while the nits, or eggs, are brown in color. There are some really good pictures at the below website and it gives a lot of information on them.

Live lice eggs are brown and located within half an inch of the scalp.Lice are wingless insects that live on hair and feed on the skin. They six-legged and feed off blood in the skin. They are about the size of a sesame seed and their hook-like claws make it difficult to remove them from strands of hair.

They change colors to match the tone of your hair, so it ranges from light to dark reddish brown. However, their eggs, or nits, are white and are found close to the scalp and are very hard to remove and sometimes mistaken for dandruff..
