I'm running Mac OSX 10.3.9 and have Windows Media Player V.9 for
Mac. When I open the WMV files, there is a msg box saying "The hardware license for this content is inconsistent." (No, I didn't pay for these files.) I think they may be protected with something called DRM. Is there still a way I can view these files? Thanks.

you can download flip4mac, which allows wmv files to play on quicktime. if that doesnt work, then the file is only compatible on windows due to the drm.

No.

"DRM" is short for "Data Rights Management". It's an algorhythmic encryption technology that can't feasibly be gotten around-- and you have the extra layer of difficulty because you're not even working with a Mac-native file format.

However, it's not like *all* .wmv files are DRM-protected. Have you downloaded something from the p2p networks? Wmv files (which are not even such a hot compression technology) on the p2p sites often are not from peers but from companies who deliberately want to retain as much control of their content as possible...whether they are seeking to get paid for the content or not.
