What is a credit reference?

I am filling out an application to rent an apartment and it asks for 3 credit references and the account numbers.

By credit references, do they mean companies that I have accounts with such as Citi Credit Cards, Cingular Wireless, etc.?

A Credit Reference is simply this. Someone you had made a loan with that you paid back in a timely fashion, without penalties.
