In the 60's, there was a company that made a car that could be used as a boat. It made a lousy car, and a lousy boat. Same is true for Digital Cameras and Camcorders. Both are very good at what they do, and mediocre at the other.

If you really want to take digital movies- then definately get a camcorder. there are a lot of different types- but that's another question entirely. If you want to have a digital camera (who doesn't), then some also take movies- but the movie quality and usability isn't as good as with a dedicated camcorder.

That all depends on what you want to do. A camcorder will record video, whereas a digital camera will typically only do still photography. Some cameras crossover somewhat, but digital photo snaps from a camcorder are of lower quality; likewise video snippets from a digital camera would be of lower quality than those taken on a camcorder. I haven't encountered one device that could do both to my satisfaction, so I recommend you choose which activity you want and choose the product accordingly.

Many camcorders can take digital snapshots too, but the quality of those still pictures is not very good. There is not any good, affordable camera I know of that can do both. If you want a cheap video camera, take a look at the Aiptek 6 mega-pixel camera. It is far from perfect, but cheap.

You can buy certian camcorders that record video, but also have a memory card slot for taking digital photos. Although they tend to be more expensive, the cost of a digital camera and a camcorder combined probably equals the same.
