Well, I think people who fall into religious cults are missing something in their life and are trying to fill the void. Perhaps they are looking for meaning in their life or to do some good. The leaders of religious cults are very good at manipulating people and with the right victims, can get them to do or believe anything. They break people down who are usually weak with low self-esteem and give them the hope of being redeemed if they join the "group." When you really think about it, there are many similarties between cults and religions, and sometimes there's no difference at all. We just condemn the ones that seem to brainwash people, take all their money, and/or have them commit suicide in the end.

for the same reasons their conned into believing you can nail a man to a cross, take him down, put him in a cave with an enormous rock over the opening and then have him rise 3 days later and ascend into heaven......it's a great story: believe everything i say [or at least PRETEND like your neighbors down the street] hate people who are different than you and say you only hate what they do not THEM, and when u die you'll come and live with me in the clouds and have wings and be happy forever and ever..........right. I think depressed or mentally ill people are the most suceptible to this type of brainwashing. But i think if you question things, educate yourself and excercise common sense, you don't have to worry about getting sucked into a cult.

Some people are desperate for answers to the hardest questions: Who are we? Why are we here? Religious Cults attempt to answer these questions by using convincing theories and other things like that. In addition, these "cults" also promise everlasting life.

Conning is a strong term, it's just that believing that this is all there is can be overwhelming. I had one friend tell me he believes he will go to Heaven with Jesus because he just doesn't want to believe his death here is the end of it all, even though he admits he cannot prove his belief.
Religion uses this fear to control people, especially the cult type ones.

From what I have observed, most everyone longs to be loved, respected and accepted. When they find that, it's easy to be drawn into something. Many cults know this and use it to gain followers. They promise, but can they really deliver? That is what reveals the true from the false. By their fruit you will know them. Beware.

Because some people are desperate for acceptance and religion provides that for people. They need something to believe in and something to live for. Sometimes people just need that kind of reassurance to keep going in this world. Unfortunately people take advantage of people in this kind of situation. They give up everything they have for their religion not realizing they are being taken advantage of.

You can fool all the people some of the time and some of the people all of the time. But you cannot fool all the people all the time. That's the way the cookie crumbles, some people are bound to be fooled by religion.
