Inaction has never solved a problem.

I think that the Middle East is an example of human evolution in action.

Before there was Christianity or Islam or even Judaism, the place was rife with hateful xenophobia.

They can't help it, successive waves of invaders, killers, and enslavers and pillagers have bred tolerance from them.

For thousands of years if you trusted a stranger in that part of the world, you opened yourself up to be killed if you were a man or sold a slaves if you were a woman or child.

Trusting people were systematically removed from the viable breeding population both genetically and culturally.

When the Jews and Christians were relatively powerless, local Muslims were all to happy to slaughter each other over small ideological differences.

Monotheism is a middle eastern invention/discovery.
The most important pacifist in the history of the world lived, taught and died there.

Christianity, a middle eastern invention, did not catch on locally anywhere near the extent that it did to the countries outside this hateful little land. Early Christians were too pacifistic to turn back an aggressive Islamic crusade.

It proves that human nature, dictated by the realities of the human living condition trumps religion or ethics.

The problem is not Islam vs Christian vs Jew per se.

The problem is a thousand generations of distrust and hate, punctuated by brief interludes of false civility based on largess and feudal one-upmanship. Generosity and forbearance is a luxury and few locally are rich enough to afford it.

Common people there may not be a lost cause, but there is no history of the kind of trust and mutual respect and compromise necessary to make a peaceful democracy work.

Democracy means accepting the will of the majority even if it does not jibe with your faith or opinion.

It will take years to develop these people culturally to the point that they learn the lesson that the west discovered only by trial and error quite recently, historically speaking.

The problem I think is that we all expect these countries to become America or France or Sweden overnight.

Democracy in the west took generations, centuries. And that was only after the idea became an ideal.

The first voters were middle aged male landowners. Decades later freemen, then younger freemen, then women then blacks and Native Indians.

Freedom developed through the "imposition" of Christian ideals, often at the expense of non-christian pagans.

I am not a Christian, but I do respect their place in history.

Perhaps in time the Middle East will learn some of the lessons Christian ideals teach us. Like the Golden Rule.

The alternative is death, death and more death.
And quite frankly, the Arab world can not win that kind of conflict.

If America becomes truly frightened of an Islamic menace, it will react the way they did with Pearl Harbor.

I think the U.S. should stay out of middle east and let them handle their problems by themselves. How much freakin money is this country losing everyday? Let the U.N. pay the bill or better yet, other countries should foot the bill.

The USA should stay outta their problems. its like if you hear your neighbors fighting, do you run over there and tell them both are worng and you are right and then kick their azzez to try and prove your point? no!!! We need to let them be them. They have been fighting since the beganing of creation!! The book states that when there is actually peace in the WHOLE world thats when it is coming to an end. I for one would like to be around for a while longer...leave those damn people alone.

It is both the greatest blessing and greatest curse to humanity. Ultimately it is a big paradox. It has given to use three of the most influential faiths in the world; namely Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Yet at the same time it has given the world its greatest modern conflicts.

I guess your opinion about us staying out of "their business" will change when gas goes up $2 more a gallon?

We have vested interests in the region...and they are not limited to economic ones. Many people in that region want to attack America right out....and they have.

We should get out and let them solve their own problems... Get out before we can't anymore... Bring our troops home...

Kathy Griffin said something really smart. I support the troops but I don't support the War!

Frankly, it bores me to death, it has been going on far too long. I am also bored with Northern Ireland for the same reason.
