There doesn't appear to be that many jobs that are excluded, espcially considering current disability discrimination laws in place within the UK. I don't think the forces are 100% ruled out.
The only reason when being colour blind can exclude you from a profession is when there's a health and safety reason why you wouldn't be able to do the job. Electricians and railway signalmen, for example, need to be able to distinguish green and red. Colourblindness might make this impossible.

But although colourblindness would prevent you from being a commercial pilot, you could probably get a private license.

Early identification of color vision deficiency may guide career choices away from:
Army, Air Force, Navy, Marine: pilots and engineers
civil aviation : pilots, mechanics and engineers
air traffic control
merchant Navy: seamen and officers
railroad : mechanics and train drivers
public transportation: driver
police (certain grades)
customs officers
firefighters
electrician and electronics technicians
technicians and druggists
textile and printing industries
color photographer, paint maker
some jobs in the film industry
jobs where one selects fruits, vegetables and meat
geology, cartography and chemistry

There is a large book available in England through Job Centre re-training that will depress the life out of him. Technically about half of all jobs can't be done by the more severally red/green colour blind. Don't even think about what he can't do, I've done about 50 jobs and only once got fired for being colour blind (wiring digital control equipment for nuclear weapons systems in Pa.) so understandable in that case. Avoid jobs w. wires and of course the worlds first industrial accident caused by CB. train driving!
There are several types of Red Green colour blindness not red or green, the other colour ones are v. rare.
