I dyed my hair black (back to its natural hair color) but when I tried to go lighter it only did my roots. I was told to bleach and then dye... but how do I go about doing that????

Color does not remove color. You will need to have the black hair dye stripped out of your hair.

First of all you need to know that once you go Black it's hard to go back. Black is the hardest hair color to get out of your hair. I suggest going to a Salon to get it fixed. I wouldn't recommend lightening your hair yourself. You have to bleach your hair out before you can do anything with it. Your roots changed color because there wasn't any black on them i guess right? But yes....please go to a salon and get it done. If you try to lighten it yourself you are guaranteed to have very uneven colored pieces.

Bleach. Wait a day. Then dye. Good Luck.

Talk to a hairdresser. I don't know of any way to lighten hair once it's dyed, as far as I know you're stuck with it until it grows out.
