By spacers, I assume you mean what I had that were called 'doughnuts' like tiny little rubber things that seperate your molars? I've had my braces off for two years, but from what I remember.. the 'spacers' were more painful than braces in general! My teeth would generally hurt after a visit to the dentist but other than that they were fine. You may need to be on soup for the first couple of days.
Just general pain killers? Panadol?
I had braces for 4 years, so consider yourself lucky if you only get 2 like most other people. I'm so bitter about that lol, but I straight teeth now, so I guess it was worth it.
Good luck with your braces, and look forward to your million dollar smile x

I had braces, and now my two sons have braces. It is not painful, as much as it can be uncomfortable. There is a difference between pain and discomfort. My orthodontist, and now my son's orthodontist has told us to take some ibuprofin if there is discomfort, you should never be in real pain, so you must decide is this PAIN, or is it DISCOMFORT? If it is real pain, then call the orthodontist back, because pain is not normal, discomfort is. Make sure that you brush really really well, which your orthodontist will tell you to do. Also learn how to use your flosser, it is very important that you floss. Having braces and keeping the teeth clean is so important. You can get cavities from not keeping them cleaned, and that is more painful than anything. Just remember how great your teeth will look once the braces are off, and you have done everything they have asked of you.

Okay.
Yes, it hurts. But you do get used to it. I was pretty much on a liquid diet for the first few days (Apple sauce, cottage cheese, carnation instant breakfast, etc.) but after that it's fine.
Then every month you go back, they check everything out, they tighten the bands, etc...and back when I had braces (about 12 years ago) they'd change the colors of the bands on the braces :). And they tighten them, which hurts for about a day and then you get used to them again. How much they're tightened each month depends on how crooked and crazy your teeth look right now :) - tightening the bands pushes your teeth into place.
Ibuprofin (Motrin or Advil) should be an adequate painkiller - the pain is not so bad you need Vicodin or something.
Be conscious of what you eat, things get stuck in braces very easily. My orthodontist gave me a list of things to avoid whenever possible - popcorn, bread and gum (which really, you're not supposed to have with braces) were my problem foods, but you can always carry a mirror or excuse yourself to go to the restroom if you get paranoid about food in your teeth. Just be careful of anything that's really hard, like candy canes and other things like that b/c there's a chance you may break the bracket off and that means another trip to the orthodontist, whom you will grow to hate (unless it's one of your parents - haha).

It hurts after the wires are put on the brackets. Putting everything on doesn't. Your teeth will feel very sore and its best to chew on something like foam rubber. This will acclimate your gums and teeth and get over the pain fast. 2-3 days. And even then its not horrendous pain just hurts when you eat.
Know real need for pain killers. Its not that bad. Take Aleve or tylenol if you want.
After about 2 weeks you'll barely notice them. Make sure to tell your doc if the wire is poking you in the back even a little bit because its easier for them to shorten it while you are there. If it end up poking later or the wire moves a bit you can just take the back of your thumbnail and push the wire in the opposite direction more in place. It might feel weird at first but it will quit poking you.

I had braces for 1 1/2 years, but I never had spacers. The pain will lessen when you get braces, I've talked to several people with spacers and they say that it does. Take Advil for the pain - and make sure to eat soft food. Just remember that you will have a beautiful smile once you get the braces off! :)

The pain doesn't get worse, it will go away after about a week, and every time you get them tightened it'll take a day or too for the pain to go away. Advil or whatever is good for the pain.
Realize that you wont have the braces forever, and that they'll make you look better and make you feel better about yourself. The dentists tell you not to eat a lot of stuff, I ate it anyways and was fine, just make sure you're careful eating. Also, the braces may scratch the inside of your cheeks, which can be irritating and feel weird. Ask for wax to put on the brackets for that.

Anytime your teeth move it will hurt like crazy. I would use an anti-inflammatory pain reliever like Motrin, also be prepared and purchase some Oragel because when your braces snag on the inside of your mouth and causes a sore it's really painful. Go to the oral hygiene section of the drug store and see what else you might need that will make it easier on you while having braces. Don't let the pain deter you from having braces. I've had about 4 sets of braces and I am truly grateful because many people aren't that lucky. Best of luck to you.

I had braces. Personally, I thought the spacers hurt worse than the braces. You will feel some pain when u first get them on and when u get them tightened every so often....but it's nothing. U can just take some tylenol....you'll be fine. There more annoying than anything else

Ahhh braces.
Your spacer pain will hurt at first, but it should go away within the next week or so.
I never took pain killers because I HATE them, but I would try using Tylenol. That's the only brand I heard to take.
Braces will hurt for the first few days, but they will get better. Don't worry!

My kids just had braces on last month. The spacers drove them crazy..but after that they didn't complain to much. I just gave them ibuprofen or alleve before each appt and they seemed to do just fine! Make sure you read the directions on the bottle though, because I don't know how old you are! My kid's said it is really more irritating than painful though. Good luck!
