The easiest way for a beginner to cook chicken is to put it in a oven safe pan (that means nothing on the pan can melt) add water to 1/2 cover the chicken. Add some chicken stock and some mixed herbs if you have them - keep it simple. Cover the top of the pan with silver foil. Pre heat the oven for 5 minutes than place the chicken (in the pan) into the oven and bake for 40 minutes on 180deg (electric). Be care-full taking the pan out of oven and removing the foil after baking.Avoid being burnt from the steam. When cool serve with a garden salad that has sliced fruit through it. Yummy instant dinner for beginners. Good Luck.

Hon, you didn't say if it was a whole chicken or not. That's important.

If it's whole, just wash it off in the sink. Preheat oven to 350.
Put it in a roasting pan.
Put some salt and pepper on it.
Cover in Aluminum Foil
Bake 1hr. 15 min.
Check for doneness by pulling the leg apart. Make sure there is NO red juice coming out of the chicken.
The last 15 min. you can uncover it and let it brown.

If it is pieces:
Check and see if mom has Shake n Bake in the house. That's easy! Read directions.
If she doesn't, put the pieces in a roasting pan. Preheat oven to 350.
Cover with Foil.
Put chicken in oven for 1 hr.
Again, take foil off last few min.
Check for doneness. Cut the biggest piece open with a knife to see if it's done.
You don't want ANY red in it at all. It's not done if it's red.

This is the simpliest way to cook chicken.

Good Luck

Rinse the whole chicken under running water, cut off each part such as the legs, wings, etc. with a knife but please don't cut yourself. =) Put the chicken in a glass pan (like 9x13) with about 4 tablespoons of butter to bake. It might be a good idea to add about 1 cup of water to the pan too so that it doesn't get dry. Cover the pan with tin foil and bake about 2 hours at 350. (That should be the right time and heat) Some seasonings that are good on top are orange juice and rosemary, or soy sauce and parsley flakes.
