Recently my first parakeet died. My other one was lonely so on saturday we got her a new friend. Well, Paula (the lonely one) seems to be EXTREMELY mean and territorial. and Sissa (the new friend) really wants to make friends, but every time she gets close to Paula, Paula snaps at her face. I don't want to have to confine them to different cages (I have a small cage that we aren't using) but we can't think of anything else to do. soo. Why dosent Paula like Sissa and what can i do about it?

Oh dear. It seems as though my mom dosen't like the idea of having two bird cages in the house. >.< Other than seperating them are there any other options?

By the way. They're in a pretty big cage. :)

ok, just a reminder. SEPERATE CAGES ARE NOT AN OPTION. i'll try giving them a few more days. If they still don't get along...well....uhh....we'll see. :/

Parakeets are like that when they meet new ones. They live together in their little home at the shop with others, but when meeting a new parakeet : Paula meeting Sissa, it takes time for them to adjust. It's happended to my parakeets, and now the new guy is adjusting and the others are accepting him. Your going to have to leave them in one cage to get used to each other or else they won't be able to survive each other. Just make sure they don't hurt each other, Paula may try to attack several times, just make sure she doesn't get hold of Sissa. And then it will be easy to see their relationship become better.

as long as they don't seriously hurt each other don't do anything. after a while they will learn to tolerate each other or even like each other. I've had the same issue with parakeets (one of a pair died, brought in a new one, they don't get along etc) and cockatiels. Actually with my tiels the male was pretty aggresive with the new female for a long time. I thought for sure I would have to separate them permanently. Now they are a pair and hatched children. You never know! I know it seems mean at first but they have to establish a pecking order and then they'll be fine. Most times birds are better off with a mate than alone. However, If one is physically injuring the other to the point of drawing blood, don't keep them together.

Parakeets, like many birds, are monogamous and their bond lasts for life. They make charming pairs, often sitting together and preening each other. When choosing a pair to put together, there is usually a period of adjustment, after which time the two birds will generally get along well together.Do not add another female budgie to the cage as two female budgies are likely to fight each other, whereas conflicts between two males is rare.Females are much more aggressive than males so its advisable to remove one female to another cage, before they harm each other!!!

Like shadowatdust said, they're the same sex, and the one you had first has set that cage up as HER domain. Any newcomer, of either gender, especially the same gender, is gonna have to learn the "pecking order" as it were. I have had budgies for decades, and I have learned this from experience. You'll either need to get used to the feuding that will continue as long as they are together, especially in a small cage, or get a second cage and put the younger or newer budgie in that one. Even a larger one won't stop the feuding if you put both of them in there. The first bird has set the pecking order, and it will not change. Good luck. God Bless you.

don't you know parakeets mat for life? Paula might still think that her mate is coming back. keep them in two different cages next to each other until they are more friendly with each other then you can put them together.
