Your best bet would be 600mg ibuprofen (3xregular strength advil or 2xextra strength motrin) every 4 hours and taken with food (or milk if unable to eat). This will keep any swelling/redness/inflammation down. You can also add Tylenol 500-1000mg (1-2 extra strength tab) every 4-6 hours, but taken in between the advil or motrin (so he is taking something every 2-3 hours basically). Any OTC gel or cream will help, but very modestly and for short period of time. His saliva will wash it away after a few minutes or maybe an hour. Often the pain is inside the gum so the topical treatment is often of little help, but safe to use usually. He can keep a hot compress on his face or area of the mouth where it is hurting to help as well. If the pain continues to be very severe I would take him to a local clinic or ER to see a physician.

Midol works very well. But I use Motrin and after seeing the dentist, I use 1/2 a Lortab with one Motrin and that usually kicks the pain completely for 6-8 hours. Good luck, a tooth ache can hurt worse than broken bones or childbirth.

If you are having a toothach there is an infection and it will not go away with out treatment so visit a dentist and get some help it could also lead to other infections without attention.

Tooth pain is caused by a bacterial infection. Go see a dentist right away before it becomes worse and you lose your tooth. Put a little Ora gel on the area and take some Tylenol to reduce the pain.

I am actually experiencing a toothache myself right now and man, they can be pretty painful.
What I have been doing (and it really helps) is rinsing my mouth with warm salt water (to kill the infection) and putting an asprin directly on my gums above the affected tooth. This numbs the nerve, similarly to how dentists administer novacaine or lidocaine. I have tried benzocaine, and OTC painkillers (ibuprofen) and prescription (vicodin) but nothing works like the asprin. Try it, you will be so grateful you did!!

You need to see a dentist--- you have an abcess. If you wish to save the tooth, you'll need a root canal. Otherwise, you will suffer some bone loss. And with the loss of one tooth, the others beside it tend to fail as well. You likely have a huge cavity.... they don't go away. And the pain is there because your body is trying to tell you something. Tell your mom to take you to a dentist, honey...

I'm sure that you should get something that will help with swelling. High dose aspirin can do that.
Then, here's the kicker....you have to see a dentist.
I know, it's bad enough that you hurt, but to potentially get a root canal,or (GASP) surgery?
It's worth it, because there are major problems this can lead to.
My sympathies.

Tylenol, until a dentist can look at it. That's what the dentist told me to take after he removed an abscessed tooth.
