What do you believe is the meaning behind these scriptures:"When Jesus saw His mother and the disciple, whom He loved standing beside her,He said to His mother,"Woman here is your son." Then He said to His disciple,"Here is your Mother." and "Thou art Peter, on this rock I will build my Church and the gates of hell will not prevail against it."

James was Jesus' literal brother and, following the crucifixion the leader of the Jerusalem church. Therefore, he ranked higher than Peter.

Peter, together with Paul, founded the church in Rome but this didn't become the center of Christian life until Constantine made it the state religion centuries later, and even then only for Western Christians.

Well I don't really have to be a non Catholic Christian to answer that, do I? (or any particular kind of christian for that matter) Joseph died and Jesus didn't want to leave His mother alone when He left. And Peter's belief in who Jesus was is the foundation of the Church, as with all who believe who Jesus was, and nothing of darkness will be able to put out its Light. There are professing christians in this day who are moving off that foundation and no longer believe who Jesus was. That is evidence that they are not a real part of the Church because Jesus doesn't build on that particular rock.

Long answer. I am not Roman Catholic; but I do suggest that you not exclude answers from people of the faith. I believe that Jesus was God in all respects. He gave to his mother a son that he could never be because He had a mission that no one understood (even to this day). His commision to Peter was to lead. The Rock is the truth; it is not the man.We know this because scripture recorded, appropriately so, for our benefit, Peters denial of Jesus when he was under pressure. If you or I are under pressure we probably will fail. It is not that we would choose to fail. That is the human that we are.

John, the disciple was standing with Mary as Christ died on the cross. In an effort to make sure his mom was taken care of Christ gave John the responsibility of caring for his mother. She also heard Christ give John the responsibility to treat her as his own mother. What an honor.

The fact that Peter was the first to acknowledge that Christ was the Son of God----was the first indication that Peter's statement---not Peter---UPON THIS ROCK I WILL BUILD MY CHURCH---not Peter---but his assertion that He is the Son of God.

He didn't say that to Peter while on the cross. Nor did He say that Peter was her son. But John who was with Mary, according to the Bible, was HER son. At least try and get your quotes straight. Remember , whatever your religion is, that the Bible has been translated so many times that very little of the real stories remain. It has been changed to the views of the men in power at different times. Sorry

In Biblical days, women were treated as property. In the Mosaic covenant, every Jew was given a parcel of land and that was to always follow the family line. This created a strict line of caretaking. Every man was responsible for taking care of his brother's family if he died. If they had a son, the son was raised by his uncle but kept his on share of the land God had given his ancestors. If there was no son, the brother would lie with his sister-in-law to give her a son, but would consider that son his own nephew. This allowed for original ownership of the land for all to be handed down through the generations. It is also why the actual location of the land is so important to Jews to this very day.

Mary's husband, Joseph, was ostensibly not around anymore. I have no idea where he went. It seems probable that he died at some point, whether by natural causes or by foul play. Either is equally likely.

Since her earthly husband Joseph was no longer around to take care of her with shelter, food, etc., the responsibility would have fallen on her other sons, James and Jude. I know Catholics don't believe that these Biblical authors were the physical brothers of Jesus, but the terminology used in the original manuscripts points to a physical familial relationship rather than the spiritual relationship the Vatican refers to. At any rate, it is well-documented that neither of Jesus' brothers believed His claim that He was Messiah. James is even said to have been extremely embarrassed by it.

That left the responsibility of taking care of Mary to one of his best friends. He chose the Apostle John, the son of Zebedee and Mary, brother of the Apostle James. John already had his family close to him. We know from the Bible that at least his brother and mother were disciples of Jesus. So John he adopted Mary as a 2nd mother and was tasked with making sure she was sheltered, fed, etc. A huge favor? Certainly. But since John was one of the youngest Apostles, he would have plenty of time to care for Mary before going abroad on his missions.

Peter was the unquestioned leader of the 12 Apostles. Jesus had hand-selected Peter as is earthly successor when He first called them as disciples. Does this mean he was the first Pope? Maybe, but I don't the papacy took shape until well into the 2nd or 4th Century. So my understanding is that since Peter was the leader of the Apostles, at that time Jesus gave Peter leadership over the disciples.

This brings up an interesting point, though. Peter was assigned to be the leader for the Jewish converts. He knew & accepted this role. But Saul of Tarsus, who became Paul, was Jesus’ hand-picked leader to share the Gospel with Gentiles. While Peter undoubtedly ministered to some Gentiles, his primary focus was the Jewish converts. So wouldn’t Paul have been a better choice to build the church on? Wither way, Peter fulfilled his purpose, as did Paul.

The Catholic Church facilitates those marriages, and considers a marriage between 2 baptized women and adult men human beings (despite if now no longer Catholic) a sacrament. The Catholic has to promise on the time of their marriage to do all it is of their potential to have their childrens baptized and raised in the Catholic faith. The non-Catholic needs to be conscious that the Catholic has made this promise, in spite of the shown fact that does now no longer could desire to make any ensures themselves.

It means the Nicene Council did a great job of forging documents to support the idea the pope was the equivalent to God.

Actually, it took the Catholic church nearly one hundred years after they invented the bible to get all the forgeries done. The bible wasn't officially adopted until 397 at the Council of Carthage.

Personally it is my policy to never ask a (person) for meanings of scriptures unless they are a close friend of mine, family or pastor; they know who you are and are better suited to answer a question of this caliber and how it pretains to you in your life. There is no one single meaning behind scriptures because everyone walks there one path of life, scriptures were written so that you may interprete them as it relates to you in your life. With prayer and meditation God will reveal his divine truth to you, but only when the time is right. Pray on it!
