if someone is married to a citizen and is trying to obtain legal immigrant status. Unsure of the stage of the process, but the spouse dies in an accident suddenly. Can that person continue to obtain their green card or will the case be closed because there is no longer an affidavit of support person?

Yes you can .. there are precedents for this happening ... contact INS ...
