I don't know who told you it lasts a day, they were misinformed, and maybe talking about 'the blues' or 'feeling down'. I've had clinical depression most of my life but only been treated for it for the last nine years. There are some days better than others, but the depression is always there, I just know how to manage it better.
If you've had it for this long, then I hope you have some medical input. Or some talking therapies? It is a very debilitating illness and no-one should have to feel left alone with it.

Clinical depression and situational depression may be two different things. The short-term feeling of the blues might be caused by something specific; once you sort of deal with it, the feeling can go away. Clinical depression is usually a chemical imbalance, though. The neurotransmitters in the brain don't act the way they should and the feeling of depression caused by the imbalance won't just go away after a day or a week. This type of depression needs to be treated. Antidepressants are designed to re-balance the neurotransmitters so that you can feel right again. It's a real, physical problem and there should be no stigma attached to seeking treatment.

There is definately no law that says depression only lasts for one day. As seen in the many other answers before mine, depression is a condition that lasts for many days at a time, sometimes even several months or years. You can't expect depression to just go away overnight, or to just wake up someday weeks later completely happy and healthy again. You have to seek help and be determined to get through it. Some ways to do this is to find your outlet; be it art, music, writing, researching, socializing or things of that sort. Another way is of course discussing your problems with people such as family, friends, (or if you find them to be the source of your problems) a professional, such as a psychiatrist or therapist. There are medicines out there that can probably help you and if you're comfortable with taking meds than by all means go for it. However the best way in my opinion is the natural way, and what your job is is to defeat your depression. I know you can do it, because I and many people close to me have done it too. ;]

I don't know where you heard that it is only supposed to last a day, but having depression for months at a time is far from unheard of. If your depression lasts for that long, most doctors today would recognize that as a medical condition and you could get a prescription to help.

True depression is not just a bad day- it's an illness, just like diabetes, and can and should be treated. There are over a hundred anti-depression meds out there, its just trial and error to determine the one best for you. Effexor is great- but tends to put on the pounds, So if this is an issue- look elsewhere. If necessary, meds can and should be continued indefinitely until the situation stops, or forever.

Clinical depression lasts a long time, sometimes your entire life. I know people that have had depression for 10, 20 years.
Everyone gets 'down' for a day or two - that's not clinical depression. That is normal. Being depressed for months is not. You need to see a doctor or therapist. If you're not over 18, talk to your parents.

Depression is not "supposed" to last any time. It can come and go whenever it does. Some people are depressed their whole lives. You don't need to feel bad for being down all the time, it's not your fault. I'm guessing you've already talked to a doctor about this, right?

I don't know who told you it lasts for a day, but that is just ridiculous information.....depression (If you really have depression) is something you have your whole life....you can be depressed about certain things going on in your life that you can work through...but chronic depression is a chemical imbalance in your brain that you have to deal with always and forever....if you are just sad about something, then talk to someone....try to figure out what you can do to make it better...if its worse than that then go to a doctor and get some help...that's all the advice i can give you...good luck.

Depression doesn't only last a day. For some it lasts for months, even years. It's a disease and it needs to be treated so that it doesn't worsen or cause a person to hurt themselves. I would consult a doctor and see about taking some anti-depressants. Zoloft is pretty good.

Depression can be situational, meaning there is a cause, something that happened to cause the depression, and this usually passes with time.
Depression can also be a result of a lack of neurochemicals in the brain and requires medication to effectively treat it.
If you are depressed for extended periods, I suggest you seek professional help.
