and then they just make up their own minds about whether it's the truth or not?

Most protestants do not follow a preacher as their "leader."

Most protestants do not have "leaders," they have "sovereignty of the soul" & "priesthood of the believer" which means they are free to make up their own minds about what the bible "really means."

BUT, there are tens of thousands of denominations, all preaching different doctrine, so it depends on which cult a person follows.

In most protestant churches, the preacher is no more special than a bum sitting on the steps begging for quarters.

Yep. That's the way it works. It is called free will. Do you remember good old reverend Jim Jones. He was a hell of a preacher and in fact had hundreds of followers and there families hinged on his every work. Of course he was screwing half of the females in his congregation and ended up convincing all of them to drink poison and take there own lives and to get there children to drink the poison too by putting it in there baby bottles and paper cups.
My point is, you have a mind. Use it. If what you hear you doubt or question then there is a reason why you are questioning it and that is called common sense. God gave you common sense so that you could distinguish between truth and lies and not be fooled by preachers that put themselves on higher pedestals just to earn a living.

Not in the Catholic Church!

The homily ( we don't have 'sermons') is supposed to take the Gospel and the other 2 readings for the day and apply them to life for us now.

No small challenge when they were written thousands of years ago....but a good homilist will find the message for today, and apply it to everyone in the church.

A good homily is a thing of beauty, full of the Truth of Jesus Christ, and challenges the listener to live out Christ's message after they walk out the door.

I think a sermon in and of itself is enterpretation....it's all enterpretation....but it comes from the Word of God.
