The above answerer has got it right. A dual purpose K-9 is one that can do both police work and narcotics detection, usually.
It's more handy for the department to have a dog trained to do both things. That way the dog can be a partner for the officer, can take down suspects, etc, but can also search for drugs if needed.

I suggest you contact your local K9 trainer the police departments goes through; dual purpose is a K9 trained to patrol and detect explosives or patrol and detects drugs - the dog is trained in two specialties.

First of all, you'll need to have him trained by a pro, tell them what you want him for ..Who he will be in contact with and he can do it..I had a guard dog for years with 3 chrildren home and he was just fine..SINGLE means that you and only you can control him.. hes not by any means a family dog....Once hes trained you REMEMBER THIS.. he is and always will be a guard dog and being so he can and will turn on someone at a minuts notice..Believe Me I know..Be carefull... Dual purpose is "able to do TWO jobs"!!! Tracking,perimeter patrol,drug detection,bomb detection,arson,search & rescue,protection...whatever.
