I used to have a pub about five miles inland from there, so know it quite well. It doesn't have Brighton's charm, and is a bit naff in an English seaside kind of way, but there is plenty to do there. A short bus ride away is Ingoldmels where the Fantasy Island theme and amusement park is based, along with a huge outdoor market. This is a day out in itself, if not two. Skeg itself is full of amusements, shops, beaches, pubs, bars and clubs, donkeys on the beach and fairground rides. Butlins do day passes for families even if you are not staying there, and there is plenty of cheap accommodation, from B&B to Caravan Parks. Book before you go though, as it is high season. The weather is usually pretty good as the area seems to have its own microclimate due to the geographical location. If you are driving, then the surrounding countryside has much to offer for the quieter days, natural beauty spots and gorgeous British pubs offering great food. Rand Park Animal Farm is about 40 mins drive and great for young children. It has a lot to offer and I think worth the trip, but it isn't as charming as Brighton.

You know that jolly little fisherman leaping through the waves in his oilskins? The one that says "Skegness is so bracing!!?" Well I went to Skegness and discovered what "bracing" means. It means "freezing"! In August we had to buy cardigans/fleeces/jumpers because the wind sweeps down from somewhere up north and it is really cold. Take a cardigan - you'll need it!

Tefi is right. I've been to both Skeggy and Brighton with my kids and Brighton wins hands down. Skegness is cold and charmless and a bit grotty. Go to Brighton :-)
