Personally, I think its just gone, but I have seen the documentary that seems to think its in Ethiopia, and they have a point. It would seem very reasonable for Soloman to have given it to his son by the Queen of Sheba for safekeeping. I still think it's long gone, but anything is possible.

Originally in the ark were three things, the manna, arong rod and the tablets when it was kept in the tabernacle, a movable tent for centuries
David moved the tent to a hill in Jerusalem and Soloman built a temple. At that point the manna and aarons rod were done.
The temple was destroyed and the ark was probbaly taken in the fall of Jerusalem by the Babylonians with the destruction of the first temple There is a statement that everything both great and small was taken.
It was not in the second temple
In a way I think its like the statement of John the Baptist "I must decrease and He must increase" I think God puts the spotlight on one thing at one time and the times comes to put the focus toward something more important as He moves history toward the scriptures being fullfilled in Jesus Christ, the final word.
I do not believe it went to Etheopia and I do not find the claims of the late Ron Wyatt who says he found it to be credible as it is his word only with no witnesses.

I heard it was in Ethiopia, that the Queen of Sheba took it back with her after visiting King Solomon. And I also saw this documentary where supposedly this artifact is guarded and that only very special visitors are allowed there. Frankly it remains a mystery.

It was lost when the Temple was destroyed in 586 B.C. Doesn't it seem likely that the victors would use the gold and discard the chest?
When the Temple was destroyed in 70 C.E. the Holy of Holies was empty.

I've seen the special on Ethiopia as well.
In the end, I think it doesn't matter as much greater things came (Jesus). The Jews of ancient disobeyed God in many ways causing the ark to be captured. Perhaps He just took it back.

The Babylonians destroyed the temple in 607BCE.And everything of value in it was carried off to Babylon. There is no record of what then happened to the Ark.

No one really knows.
I read one theory that it was taken by the Romans when they destroyed the Jerusalem temple in the 1st century, and melted down for the gold.

No, it's not true. I also heard it's in Ethiopia. I don't believe it exists any longer as an actual physical relic.
