Personally with IrfanView I wouldn't do any of the suggestions so far. I would start IrfanView, then on the window that opens click 'Options' and then 'Set file associations...'. Now click the 'Images only' button on the right hand side near the top. I would also check 'Add IrfanView to "Send To" shell menu' and 'Add "Browse with IrfanView" for Drives and Folders to shell menu'. Finally click 'Ok' Now even if something else overwrites your file associations you can still right click the pic, select send to, -->IrfanView.
The reason I would do it this way over the other suggestions is even though they will work, they will only work for that one file type. Meaning that if you do it for a jpeg photo (file extension .jpg) then IrfanView will definitely become the default viewer for jpegs and only jpegs. If you want to view a different image type like a gif or a png you'll have to do the process over for each and every image type you want to view. The other method I outlined avoids all the extra work.

You are all wrong wrong wrong. When you right click on the image (jpg or whatever), choose Open With.... then Choose Program, then go through the list that it gives you. Choose Irfan Viewer BUT BUT BUT, remember to check Always use the selected program to open this kind of file. Failing which, you will only be able to open with Irfan everytime you right click. You should then see all your pictures with Irfan icon.

In My Computer.
Click Tools > Folder Options
Click File Types tab
Find the file type you want Irfan to handle. Then adjust the info about which program loads to handle it.
Sometimes the auto config in Irfan doesn't work or the other program overwrites it.

Go to the folder of where the file is. Go to TOOLS, then Folder Options. Then under the File Types tab you can set the application you want certain files to open with.
Or you can just right click on the image and select OPEN WITH and you can browse to find the app you want it to open with.
