In the USA the most we've seen the transmission of Rabies from is from the "Skunk". It would be almost un-thinkable to suspect a "rat" of carrying the disease. Same with bats, it's very rare. Altho, it has been a "wives tale" for years that bats DO carry rabies, we haven't seen a case of that in several decades. Mainly the skunk, which ends up coming into contact with our pets, thus dog/cat rabies. This is why its the law to have our pets vaccinated against rabies.

Now notice, I said it was "rare" for a rat, or bat to carry rabies, I "did not" say impossible. Rabies is transmitted through a bite 99% of the time, so if your ever bitten by a wild animal, you should be seen immediately.

Do Rats Carry Rabies

Obviously, only if the rat had rabies. Rabies can be spread by any animal that has it and only if it contacts an open wound... either an existing wound or from a bite. This includes inhaling rabies laiden air.

does rabies spread by rat bite?

IF a rat has rabies then yes...it could spread. BUT....it is VERY rare for a rat to have rabies. And not just ANY animal can carry rabies, cold blooded creatures (gators, fish, turtles) cannot carry this disease. The main animals that carry it are wolves, racoons, bats or foxes. Nasty disease if a human catches it though.....ugh. :-(

would depend on the rat. Most pet rats for instance, the cute white ones sold in pet shops?, do not have rabies and therefore cannot spread the disease. A good many wild rats die quickly from the disease and tend to avoid people out of the psychosis the disease produces. However, wild rats do indeed carry rabies and therefore can indeed infect whomever they may bite.

No it cannot spread through rat bite. Rabies can only be spread by dogs and cats, although dogs are more notorious for that.

What you and others may be confusing is Plaque which is spread by rats.

Yes. But just be prepared that if you take the dog to the Vet, if they don't know if the dog has had a rabies shot, then Animal Control usually puts the dog in isolation for 2 weeks to watch him for signs of rabies.
