P2P stands for "peer-to-peer". P2P software allows one user to download files from other users on the Internet. It is different from the conventional Internet model of downloading files from a single server.
P2P is a more more efficient way of downloading, if lots of people all want one big file (let say 100 people want a 100MB file). A very popular protocol for P2P today is called "BitTorrent".
>> In the conventional model, the original owner would have to distribute the big file (100MB) to all the people. This would require a tremendous amount of bandwidth on the part of the server (100MB x 100 people = 1GB).
>> In the P2P (BitTorrent) model, if 100 people all want the same big file -- each of the 100 people can get 1% of the file from the original owner (so the original owner, in theory, only has to transmit the whole file once, or 100MB). Then, each of the 100 people share their 1% of the file to the other 99 people, in exchange for the 1% each holds. So in theory, the 100 people each transmit and receive 100MB.
Many people use BitTorrent for illegal purposes. For instance, for distributing illegal movies or software. However, BitTorrent can also be used for legitimate purposes (e.g. distributing copies of Linux, a free software that is also very large in size).
Instead of answering your question generically, I'll just tell you what you need to get started. A very popular P2P software is called Azureus, which is free software that lets you use BitTorrent:
Again, The way BitTorrent works is one person decides to share a file. He informs the world that the file is available by posting a "Torrent" file -- a breadcrumb of sorts. Then, others use the Torrent to start downloading, sharing bits and pieces of the file with each other until everyone has received the entire file. So long as any one single person exists out there who has the entire file remains online and sharing, it is possible for everyone else to get the file. Here is a good article / backgrounder about BitTorrent:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BitTorrent
The secret, then, is where to find Torrents. Torrents can be used illegally (downloading movies, CD's, etc. that are copyrighted); or legally (downloading a Linux distribution, for example -- which is free to distribute).
Two very popular places to look for Torrents are:
http://www.torrentz.com/
http://www.torrentspy.com/
To download Azureus, go here:
http://azureus.sourceforge.net/download.php
To use Azureus, simply go to one of those websites and find a Torrent for a file you would like to download. Download the Torrent and open it with Azureus. The program will do the rest.
You are hereby informed that you should only download content legally.
