listening to a sermon? Or do you feel like you learn more and contribute more by doing good deeds in your everyday life?

I learn more by doing good things in everyday life. There is no point to church, I don't need some preacher telling me how to get closer to God, I can figure that one out on my own.

I don't think you can get anything out of church if you're just "sitting there" - or especially if you're sleeping! (not that I haven't fallen prey to sleeping a few times as well). A good book to read is the Purpose Driven Life - it talks about how church is not something we should "get something out of". However, I believe church is important because it is a time of fellowship with other believers. It strengthens you. It also helps you learn amd grow in your Christianity (hopefully). However, I had a hard time learning and growing when I went to Catholic Church because so much of it was so repetitive and not many people knew why they said what they said or did what they did when I asked them. I also think that sometimes it's better when church is broken up into elementary school, middle school, high school, adult - so that sermons can be made to really speak to that age level. For example, a sermon on marriage and divorce is fine - but for highschoolers or elementary students, they may gain more from hearing a sermon on how to tell their friends about Christ. Or for highschool & middle school - about not having sex before marriage. I think when the sermons are directed at an appropriate age level, those people can really understand the sermon and gain more out of it then they would listening to a sermon aimed at adults.

Yes I do feel like I walk away with something after church. I listen and have a great amount of patience. Everyone needs to take the time to slow down and go to church. You meet great people and when you are at the right church fit for you, a sermon can give you lots of inspiration and lift your spirit.

I do good deed in my everyday life, but more so for my family. But if I see that someone's house is on fire, yeah...I'll call 911. Thats as far as I go in good deeds.

Do not think of a church as a building where you go and sing songs and listen to a sermon for an hour or however long. A church is actually a group of people who share very common spiritual ideals. The building that contains them is merely brick and mortar and whatever else a building is made of. The building is not a church. The people worshiping inside are. When you go to church you should feel almost, if not more comfortable than being asleep on the coziest bed.

And do not believe that you can only worship and praise God on Sundays. He should be praised daily. I get a lot out of sitting amongst my church, I get even more when I know that I'm doing something out of faith--the faith that I'm doing His Will.

I get a lot out of listening to the sermon. You learn something new every Sunday. But I also think the sermons help you to do more good in everyday life.

I think it all depends on what you are looking for in a church and the type of church a person attends. In my church, the pastor wears blue jeans, they don't take up an offering (just a plain box at the back of the sanctuary with a small note on the church bulletin stating where the money goes into) and the music is contemporary.

But back to your question...I get a lot out of sitting in a church. I meet people who are concerned for me and have helped me. I also hear sermons that have meaning today. For instance, this past Sunday, it was about the courage of Esther to face an incredible obstacle, and how she got the courage to make a tough decision.

By going to church, it inspires and motivates me to go out and do things that not only glorify God, but to do things to make our world a better place to live. Because faith without works is dead.

Both. Not all sermons are timely, but more often than not, I am reminded of how incredibly much little dumb old me is overwhelmingly and perfectly and unconditionally loved by the all powerful, immortal Creator of the whole universe....sometimes, when life is stressful, and I don't like my own self much, it's important for me to be reminded.
The best part of church, however, is hanging out with friends before and after the sermon. At my church, they serve coffee before and after the sermon, so the fellowship is that much sweeter. :-)
After the sweet fellowship and an encouraging sermon, my heart is lighter and I feel even more empowered to serving God by serving others....which is, by your terminology, "doing good deeds in everyday life."

First of all- doing good deeds does not get you into Heaven.
Second - if you are not getting something out of the preaching at your church then I suggest you find a new one.
It is a great feeling to walk out of church and feel like you got something out of the sermon. I know a lot of churches I have gone to, are boring and I can't listen and I want to sleep. My church , however, is different - I get something out of it every time I go.

You Know Church for me is just relaxation,The way the economy is and the other stresses of everyday life, when I'm at church it gives me the strength that I need, to hold on just a Little while longer ,and the faith to say ,God is really gonna work this out!And by gaining that extra strength, I am able to go on and do good deeds in my everyday life, knowing by faith ,that the outcome is that God is gonna pour out that special blessing just for me!

I get something out of it, sometimes. I feel like I need to be well-rounded when it comes to God; not only do I need to go to church, but I need to have study groups with friends, talk with my pastor, and above all else, pray. God is with me, every moment, therefore whenever I need an answer or just want to chat, He's there. Ultimately I think it's easier to develop a relationship with God with the help of church/family/friends, because then you have accountability and also you can learn a lot from someone who is older and wiser :)
