I don't know if this "rule" has been wiped out, but it was definitely in effect from the 1960s to the late 1970s.

Was being left-handed a sin?

they don't do it anymore, the rule was from about a century ago where they believed left-handed people were servants of the devil. The catholic church justified this belief on the basis of several bible quotations that stigmatized left-handedness.

I never heard that. Many people in my family are left-handed and Catholic... and were born in that time frame, and before and after. I think some people (not sure if it was a religios thing) tried to force their children to become right-handed because left-handedness was somehow considered by many to be a sort of learning disability, and it looked awkward to some... but this just is not the case!

The Nuns that used to teach in Catholic schools thought that Left-handedness came from the devil. This was NOT an official position of the Church. I learned to write in a Catholic school and our teachers let us write left-handed if we were (however I am right-handed.)

Not around here...more like pre 1960. I can remember left-handed freinds being given special books to help them learn to make letter properly -- I was a righty with extreme difficulty making nice cursive letters, so I noticed things like that when learning to write.

In the old days it was discouraged not because it was evil, but because its very hard for right handed teachers to teach lefties to write properly. We actually discussed this back in teacher's college.

It was only some people who tried to change them. It was never the Churches position. My son is left handed and Catholic. The public school tried to make him right handed. We home school.

Not only for Catholics. My nephew was born left handed and my mother tried for the longest time to get him to use his right hand, by changing the spoon right left to right etc., until my sister found out and asked her to stop it. It was/is an old superstition regarding the devil etc. Thanks heavens for more enlightened times!

no it was not. My mother was a lefty by nature but the nuns who taught school did not want to turn the paper to see her penmanship so she was taught to write right handed. It was their preference.
