It depends on what hot wire you are talking about. The big wire from the battery is usually red, but sometimes orange.
In the wiring that goes through the vehicle, each wire has it's own color code. Hot can be yellow or blue with a green marker. It might be gray or about anyother color, with or without a marker.

Usually the "hot" wire in a DC circuit is red. The best way to check is with a meter (can be picked up for less than$10),or a auto tester which is a wire and clip on what looks like a screwdriver. Wal-mart or an auto parts store has them.

Black or red. One sure way to find out is to turn the ignition on and touch the end of the wire to something metal. If you see a spark, its the hot wire. Don't worry too much about the spark. You're only dealing with 12 volts.

" ..... and the ground will always be black."
Ground? Earth? In a motor vehicle ?
The vehicle is isolated from "ground" by four circular rubber devices called tyres. (Rubber is an insulator.)
