I'd like to be able to reassure my children that things are going to be alright.

Aspects of the biosphere will be changing for a very long time. The following are estimates made by the IPCC:

CO2 emissions peak: 5 - 100 years.

CO2 level in the atmosphere stabilizes: 100 - 300 years.

Global temperatures stabilize: a few centuries.

Sea level rise due to thermal expansion: centuries to a few thousand years:

Sea level rise due to ice melting: Several thousand years.

CO2 returns to pre-industrial levels: More than 100,000 years.

You can reassure your children that changes will not be fast and that they will have plenty of time to get ready so they will never by in physical danger, but as they get old enough to understand it would be kinder to prepare them for the coming changes rather than offer false reassurances.

See the chart on page 12 of the report below:

Either a)Global warming will be resolved when people stop looking after the self and start thinking as a global community. So the same day that they wipe out world poverty and desolve all armies.
b) They come up with a viable alternative to fuels that doesnt contribute to the problem. I'd bet on this solution and considering that fossil fuel will only last for the next 20-50years by a lean estimate I'd bet on that time scale

If you want to reassure your children that things are going to be alright, get involved NOW! There are things you can do to ensure that your grandchildren and their kids will enjoy the bounty of this good Earth;

REuse, REturn, REcycle. Not just aluminum soda cans, but cardboard, plastic, glass, metal, styrofoam, newsprint, phone books, magazines, scrap paper, tin cans, asphalt, and anything else that isn't biodegradable. Don't contribute to the landfills filling up to overcapacity.

Stop polluting the air and water with emissions from you gas-guzzling SUV.

Buy recycled materials such as carpeting made from plastic soda pop bottles; paper made from used paper instead of virgin trees; and products packaged in recycled containers.

Join environmental organizations that try to protect and preserve the delicate ecological balance between man, plants, and other animals so that we can all survive on this Earth as Nature (or an intelligent designer, or an evolutionary process, or God) intended.

Start teaching your kids NOW to be good stewards of our environment so that they don't end up having to wear gas masks in order to breathe fresh air.

Educate yourself by reading "E" - the Environmental magazine (and many other publications) that address the issues of global warming, the hole in the ozone, and and everything else that is slowly ruining our world. -RKO-

Well, then, reassure them. The World isn't going to change global warming in any way shape or form. Neither are humans. We are totally significant.

We won't, because business runs to make a profit now. Any solutions cost someone money and no-one wants to 'lose' money by clearing up their own mess as long as their competitors don't have to.
Legislation to force business to act responsibly takes time to be put into place by central government. Govt officials are advised by business, and they always plead for more time. Legislation always ends up getting watered down to make it acceptable to the majority and get it passed. Then you've got nuts like Bush who seem to believe that we are immune to ultra violet rays and air particles.
Teach your grandchildren to take responsibility for their own actions now. If everyone did that the problem would't have arisen in the first place.

Sadly it will take may years for us to get on top of global warming is there is alot to do and not many countries are willing to help and it takes all of the countries to do their bit for the affects to be finally noticed, not just some.

well 2 help them feel better do things around the house that will make them feel they're helping out. Such as turning off the lights when not in use, not putting the tv on standby; not using the car as often; cutting down on water wastage. You know that kind of thing
