The bird's nose, known as the cere,is the way to tell the difference. A male's cere will be dark blue or purple.A female's cere will be light blue, pink,or tan-pink,or a combination of those colors. You need to wait till the bird is around 6 months old to really figure out its gender.
You need to go out and buy a pet care manual on your birds so you have this information as well as other important information at hand, always. Also try getting Bird Talk magazine.

B.E. has the best answer with phylle coming in a close second. It is also true, as marie c said, that a little bit of age will provide the true color to look for in the cere, or what I call their nose. Also, the male parakeet flies much better than the female. The male can fly faster, further and turn corners much better than the female. Also the sound of a male flying is much quieter than the female since he is much sleeker in body design and has a much better wing "rotation" in his flight than does the female. Her sounds are much noisier, flapping sounds as feathers beating the air around her while his sounds are much quieter because he moves through the air better. Also, the male is much more playful tnan the female. All of these observations come from owning parakeets since the early 1970's. Have fun with them. They're great birds. God Bless you.

Above the beak where the holes are, if the color is blue then it is a boy, if it is brownish peachy color then it is a female. Although it is hard to tell when they are really young because they all have it pinkish blue.

a male would have very bright feathers...if they are dull, it's a female.
try a google "image" search online, you could compare photos.
