I agree that physical exercise will help curb the depression. It gets your endorphins up and those help fight the depression.
To that, I'd like to add journaling. Sometimes writing what you are feeling helps you identify the source of your depression.
Also, try and get some counseling. If you are a teen, there are hotlines available. If you are an adult, but, like me, have limited funds, there are churches and other agencies that provide free counseling.
I, too, was a self-injurer..not so much cutting as other forms of destroying my body in order to deal with depression and anger that I had nowhere to lay down. When I was a teenager, it was the 1970's and this sort of thing was taboo even among those who might have liked to help.
Nowadays there are many resources available. Exercise and journaling were (and still are) the ways I dealt with this in the many years when counseling with an understanding person simply wan't available.
I will include some resources for you in the source section along with any comments I might have on those sources.
Lastly, never underestimate the power of chocolate! For serious depression, I recommend Lindor Balls.

Try writing down a few notes every time you feel the need to cut. The time, place, who is around, who is not around, what was happening just before you felt the need to cut. You will see a pattern soon and figure out what is causing it.Then figure out why it bothers you and work on stopping it. If you cannot do this on your own, get help now because your depression will continue to get worse and you never know what will happen. I have dealt with depression my whole life and didn't put 2 & 2 together until I was about 40. I didn't realize that being molested at a young age was the main problem. I had put it out of my concious thoughts but it was still there digging into my happiness and self esteem. Please get help NOW so you can have a productive and happy life!!

Well, just with that statement it seems as if your on the right track. Try to find some help, from a professional such as a psychiatrist or a therapist, or even fron friends and family. Talking about what you're going through often is the best way to deal with your problems. There are also a lot of medications out there that can help with depression symtoms, which you might consider discussing with a psychiatrist or your doctor. Also, another method of coping with depression can be listening to music, drawing, writing, socializing with friends, or whatever your outlet is. Nonetheless, what you shouldn't do is resort to self mutilation, since that only hurts you more in the end.

Cutting is a cry for help, dear. If you live with your parents, tell them right away and go get some counseling. Make sure the doctor is certified for this type. A family doctor will not do. Depression is a serious thing. Sometimes medicines will help, a change in diet, and exercises. If you get suicidal, call the national suicide hot line. Good luck, dear. You're not alone.

There are many ways in which depression can be treated. Exercise is a great way in which you can help with the depression and get your mind off cutting. I would strongly suggest that you seek medical attention for your depression. Medications are easily available and they are proven to help with depression. A counselor could be a good thing to do as well to help you learn coping skills for depression and self harm. Good luck and find someone soon.

Cutting is just a cry for help. Causing yourself pain to get a release. If you feel the need to cut yourself, try talking to someone, a doctor, counselor, friend. You need to find someone you trust to confide in. Get the help you need, but cutting isn't the answer. You are only hurting yourself and leaving scars that will never go away.
Whatever you do, don't keep it inside until you feel the need to cut. Talk to someone before it gets that bad. Have someone you can call to talk to anytime, day or night. Just get some help before you cause real damage.

You are part of a phenomenon that has had some attention due to the new EMO music genre. Cutting/self-mutilation is NOT a healthy way to deal with depression. Call 1-800-DONT CUT and seek help from your parents/friends.

I've been suffering from depression for about a year now. I don't like to place labels, but it's helpful to name not being in a good place. I find that what's been helping me to recover is staying active at all levels, trying to be positive at all levels, and keeping hope that thing will get better. I know it's not easy not to be self-destructive because I've been there and done that and it's not over. It's a long road ahead. It took a while to get me here and it's going to take a while to get things back to "normal". In fact, it might be in your best interest to start planning something big and fun like a vacation or a cruise. I've been planning my study abroad experience for this fall and believe me, having something to look forward to helps you stay focused on good things to come while in the meantime, keeping you occupied with planning it. Good luck!

When I am depressed I just try and keep busy. I really like to go to the gym or go running or something. It's a great way to clear your mind and feel good about yourself at the same time.

Go get help from your doctor. If you are depressed they will prescribe a depression medication for you. Meanwhile. Go on a run. It hurts so much the first mile but afterwords you will feel relieved.
