I find them a great annoyance, especially on tender fruits, such as plums; when you peel off the sticker, the skin of the fruit comes off with it, making it necessary to eat the fruit immediately.

LOL... I like the way you think. I never really thought of it as an option, just that the stickers always were and always would be there. But definately not necessary, no one reads them anyways.

Well there is always a laser barcode imbedded into the skin of the fruit that may or may not effect the fruit in some negative way? Or some other scientific alternative that will be lots less annoying but potentially hazardous to our health. I think a little sticker is just not really that big of a deal in the big scheme of things. Hint: Don't peel the sticker off, until you ARE ready to eat it! And if the skin comes off... You wont have to spend hours turning it round and round trying to decide where to bite it first... Sheesh!

this year they are replacing the stickers with some kinda laser thing that leaves an imprint on the skin of the fruit

For many its aquality seal of approval thing. People want a Chiquita Banana not a Smelly Mel's Banana.

There are too many varieties and noone can tell them apart. The 4 digit PLU# on the label tells the cashier what you are buying.
