Well, since all I can give is my personal view, since that is all I know for sure, I know it is just the working towards a goal. I know there is a destination to get to (the end of the game) and I want to complete it.

I have a friend who loves sports and will spend a weekend (or more) hanging with his buddies, watching all his teams play. He thinks it's a great, positive way to enjoy his weekends.

I on the other hand, will spend time with my buddies over a weekend gaming. I think it's the exact same thing only more interactive, competitive and entertaining but for some reason, my sports buddy thinks we are lame because of it.

I personnally love the interaction and social aspect of it. If I'm not with my friends I don't play near as much.

It's the interactivity, the freedom, and the downright weirdness of it all, along with catering to one's desires to compete and win.
But it's not always all of these at once.
