FIRST! This question is not to "rag" on those who believe in god. This question is not designed to call faith into question.
I've seen postings on Answers, one recent, describing someone living in an abusive situation and is asking for "Christian advice". Other questions have been asked for prayers to ask how to get out of an unsafe or dangerous situation - through God. What is going through these minds? Why are they not calling the police, seeking medical attentions, seeking psychological help?
If you believe in God, doesn't your god also want you to fend for yourself or use your brain to one degree or another? If someone is afraid of being abused, tortured, or possibly killed - why is it a matter for God and not the police?
Has God become such a HUGE crutch that some have become totally helpless? If you have a broken leg, why would you not go to a doctor? If you are being physically, mentally, and psychologically abused, why would you not go to a shelter???
I don't understand.

The Belief in God is not a weakness but a strength, not a crutch but a path.
You are basically calling people who are believers "stupid"
and ignorant dumb people who don't know common sense. I'm not thankful for your comments.
I have used my brain, and common sense tells me that evolution is a bunch of crap...
Lets set a can of green beans on the table for a billion years or 2 and see it a jolly green giant evolves and pops out....
How did the universe big bang itself into existance a kabillion years ago from nothing?
Tell me how a very intracet and vast universe forms from nothing without God? Tell me how we have thought and self awareness when this is not neccesary for darwinian survival? Where is the missing link?, o yeah thats right there has to be millions of missing links for evolution to be true, too bad they havent found any yet.
It is just a Theory that cannot be proven, but is accepted as fact, for those closed minded individuals that can't accept the fact that there is a God.
The belief in evolution takes an insane wmount of blind faith. Evolution is built upon "Maybes" "perhapses" and "possiblies"... The only thing that evolves is the Theory itself, ever trying to explain itself in a poor attempt to cover up the vast holes and gaps that permiate throughout its entire makeup.
You have to be pretty blind and closed minded not to Believe that God exist...
the Bible calls people that don't believe in God "fools professing to be wise"
You are just steriotypeing believers as retarded, come on what is your problem?
May God grant you wisdom.

I totally agree with you and disagree also. Prayer is just a reliance of God's infinite wisdom to show you the way. That does not mean sit back and stay stuck because God didn't come and remove you. It means God will give you the graces and the knowledge you need to help yourself...ie, leaving, calling the police, going to a doctor or seeking a counsellor, etc. There are some situations where fear can cloud clear thinking and right reason and prayer can help as God will illuminate the mind and point us to the clarity of thinking and action we need to take. I always say "pray" because God is the way and will help guide us to the proper responses and actions WE must take to help ourselves.

God is not a crutch - quite the contrary. He is the only answer to any situation we face in life. And it is when we are helpless that His grace and love is made most evident. BUT He has given us brains to use and judgement to protect ourselves from situations that cause us harm.
I suspect that those who would ask for Christian advice to get out of an unsafe situation would be just as indecisive were they not Christians. Some people are so unsure of themselves that they would risk harm rather than make what they might see as the wrong decision - they are so emotionally enslaved to the perpetrator that, even in the face of physical harm, they hesitate to flee. Happens all the time to Christians and non-Christians alike. It's one thing to want to do what is right in the eyes of God, it's another to ignore red flags. God provides these shelters and helpers - it's not His desire for someone to put themselves at risk for the sake of a marriage.

My GOD empowered me to leave an abusive situation.
Nowhere in the Bible is Jesus a doormat. Nowhere is he an abuser either so after throwing off the old standard I had been taught to live by " divorce is never accepted - you should never leave your husband or family unless you can prove adultry " I was praying about things and GOD did instill upon me the desire to do for myself and to quite being a doormat for an abusive man that did not love me.
Does this mean that GOD told me to divorce- no- He made me think and pay attention- and I got a lot of signs that my ex was indeed cheating. SO I divorced and dealt with it. GOD gave me a peace about everything and that helped me to keep from losing my mind during the process.
Sometimes we as Christian wait and let someone else tell us what to believe and do. Unfortunately, some people need someone to blame so they blame GOD for not delivering them from their pain or suffering. He is not gonna come down and physically take us to the lawyers, doctors or police station- we have to do that ourselves.

All it narrows down to is the same thing you are doing answering questions with questions. When someone is abused they live it so they turn to someone to ask why, you and I are not there neither are the police so the one that they feel closer to them is GOD. Someone in a dangerous situation ask why to whom ever is closest you and I are not there neither are the police so they ask GOD. Fending for your self is one thing, but rationalizing how to fend your self when you probably had not done it before who are you gona ask the one that you feel closer to you and to most people that is GOD. I think is a question of a question that belief puts upon each and everyone, now what do you believe in?

I am a christian but i agree with what you are saying. Allot of Christians rely too much on the turn the other cheek rule, not realising they only have two. That's not to say I condone violence but sometimes you have to fight for yourself. I am Egyptian living in Australia and stories I have heard about my parents homeland relate exactly to what you are saying. Egypt was once a christian country, but the Christians unwillingness to fight left the country overrun by Muslims, after they where finished culling them all. To this day if you are a christian living in Egypt you have to pay an extra tax. Just an example of how relying on Gods PHYSICAL saviour will get you in trouble.

i understand that u think people rely on God too much. I do agree that they should call a doctor if their leg is broken or if sumone's abusing them to call the police. but they could also ask God to help them by giving them faith that they'll be OK. But if they just pray and do nothing they'll go nowhere. They need to know that God wants them to go to their doctor, policeman, neighbor or sumthing if they're in trouble or hurt.

First off this only pertains to the christian god. From a young age you are told to put all of your faith in god, basically you are lead to believe that everything will be perfectly fine if you just believe in god and ask for help. My personal opinion is that it teaches people to not take care of themselves and to not ask for help from someone that can help you. As for weather or not their god wants them to fend for themselves, the answer is probably no since it tells them repeatedly to put faith in him and only him and that he will deliver. And I cannot answer as to why people will not go to doctors, police, shelters, ect. but I suppose everyone makes their own decisions based on beliefs, so if you believe putting your faith in a god will help you then you wont go for help from people who can fail, even though gods fail too.

i dont understand either. the only fashion that God has made me helpless is being able to get into heaven on my own.
there are some sects within the christian religion, that abhor and avoid medical treatment, no matter how ill a person may be. they figure that if God wants them dead, he will take them.
i like to think that if He wants me to live, then He will give me enough brains to take an asprin.
