My son had one yesterday, what should I expect? He has a doctors appointment at 1:30pm (in about an hour) but I would like to know of other parents who went through this... What should I expect? Did it happen more than once to your child? Is he or she ok mentally now? behavior?

He had a fever of 103.3 when he woke up, we got that down to about 100.. then I took it a little before the siezure and it read 100.9... when the paramedics got here his temp read 104.9.... (Yes that is WAY to high) but they did say it really spikes before a siezure. He is only 21 months old.

CALM DOWN !
Understandably you are worried about your child but if you are worked up your child is feeling your vibes.... Febrile Seizures can be scary for parents... and some children are prone to these seizures- It is the bodies way of handling the seizure ( think of it as when a fuse blows - the fuse intercepts the load before it does damage ) your childs body was doing exactly what it is supposed to do - the body is an amazing thing.. When you take your child in, ask your pedi. EXACTLY what steps you should take each and every time your child runs a fever.... have any necessary meds. on hand at home and in the car ( for trips etc. ) and instruct day care what to do just as you will be instructed.. your child will be just fine with good medical instruction....

My son got febrile seizures all the time when he was between 1 and 2 years of age. His were even more concerning than usual because he would have several in one night which is atypical of febrile seizures. Also, they would even happen with a low grade fever (under 100) He has thankfully grown out of them but he underwent EEG testing (which was awful) and we had to keep medication on hand at all times in the event a seizure would last more than 5 minutes (which never happened). I think your Doctor will tell you that most kids outgrow them by age 4. Also, when my son was first diagnosed, there was some confusion as to whether his episodes were febrile seizures or night terrors. I guess many of the symptoms are similar.

My son's 17 months old, and though he hasn't had a febrile seizure, the doctor did tell me about them. That they can occur when baby's temperature spikes suddenly. Usually the seizure will happen before you even realize that the fever is so high. He said if it happens, not to worry too much, just keep the baby comfortable and if it lasts more than a minute to call 911, other wise just to call his office to make an apt asap. They're scary, but not likely to be life threatening. Hang in there, let us know how your boy is!! Hope he feels better soon!

my 22 month old had one in February. Completely scary for a parent. He went to bed without a sniffle and then just woke up vomiting and had glossy eyes. The shaking part of the seizure didn't start until we got to the ER. They ended up keeping him in ICU for 6 days but they said that Seizures don't usually do any damage. It's the lack of air the child receives during prolonged seizures that causes damage. As long as they were able to get the child on additional oxygen in a relatively short period of time, there shouldn't be any damage physically or mentally.
Very scary though! I'm sorry you had to go through that.

first off don't get your self into a panic - did he have a fever that you were unaware of - did he fall down without you knowing it?
How old is your child? is he going through puberty?
If he had one from fever then it's really usually not bad - it just means you have to keep an eye out for him when it comes to infections and fevers and to make sure he doesn't spike.
Did he fall down and stop breathing - that too can be just from shock - if they think it's epilepsy don't let them give you medication without doing an getting a positive reading on the EEG - your child will be come woozy and kinda out of it .
If he is going through puberty - sometimes you can have pubescent seizures that will go away with time.
Read up on everything before you start giving any medication - sometimes the medication can set off other illnesses like lupus or even schizophrenia
Your doctor will probably want to know when and how it happened and for how long - he might order an EEG or send you for other tests just keep cool most the times it means nothing but the brain of a mother will expand and that will make your child scared too
everyone is fine now but their mother you could call unbalanced

My daughter had febrile seizures for several years. This type of seizure is caused by temperature spikes. She is mentally fine. Behavior is fine. She did at some point begin having small seizures that they never did find the cause of. We'd have spinal taps and no answer. We did put her on a drug for a while to control them and she just eventually out grew them with no harm done.....except scaring the parents! The key for us was to make sure to control the temperature. Good luck - I'm sure it will be fine as they are not uncommon and not epilepsy related etc.

My son is three and had one a couple of months ago. I didn't know what it was and totally freaked. We went to the emergency room and they kept him overnight just to see if he would have another one. They told me that it was just from the fever he had and that some children are more prone to seizure than others. He has been completely normal since then, and he doesn't remember the seizure. But it's still so scary for me! The doctor told me they allow EVERYONE to have 3 febrile seizures in their lifetime before they worry about it. (His father had seizures as a child)

It happens when the child's fever gets high. My friend's daughter has them, and she is ok! The child is not scared and has no recollection of the siezure. To the child, it seems like they just blinked and now everyone is freaking out. So, try to stay calm! The doctors say that the longer your child goes without having one, the less likely it is that they'll have another. It is scary, but you can reduce the chances of it happening by keeping fevers low. Your doctor will tell you how to best do that for your child. Best of luck!

My daughter had a febrile seiazure at 1yr old. She had to be admitted because she was also dehydrated. She, however had not had any signs of being sick. She is now 6 1/2yrs and we have not had one since.

i have had this experience 4 times. my girl was 3 months old with her first 2. she finds it hard to keep her temprature down. this is something youll have to learn. about striping them down when they have temps and sponging them etc......just to cool them. no problem mentally. but if you ever have it happen again get yr child straight to hospital. if a temp doesnt come down no matter what you do and medicine is not working get them to a doctor or hospital quickly. they do lack oxygen for a little while usually not enought to do damage but it can occur. hope this helps
