Losing 20 pounds by August 29th SAFELY will be tough, but you can do it. Here's how:
1. Walk for at least 15 minutes every day. Get your heart rate up but don't go overboard. You should NOT feel winded.
2. Learn to listen to your body. Eat only when you're hungry (your stomach will be grumbling), don't stuff when you eat, and no between-meal snacks or drinks except water -- remember, if your stomach isn't grumbling, then you're not hungry so don't eat.
3. Try to eat stuff that will help you drop the weight like nuts, beans/legumes, green veggies, eggs (high in protein and "good" fat), olive oil (also high in "good" fat), lean meat/fish/poultry, whole grain breads/cereals/pasta, and fresh fruit (especially any kind of berries)
4. Try to avoid stuff that has nothing but useless fat and calories like soft drinks, cookies, cakes, chips, fast food, junk food, white bread-based stuff, refined sugar, etc. NOTE: Chocolate is actually good for you, but not in large amounts, so have a little here and there.
5. Allow yourself 1/2 a day per week to "cheat" where you can eat whatever you want, but remember -- don't stuff!
Good luck!

You may not be able to lose a full twenty pounds but you can make a good dent in your goal. The trick to losing it and keeping it off is to make some permanent changes, not 'going on' a temporary diet.
A lot of asthma sufferers have discovered ways to exercise. Talk to your doctor about the newest information and options. Exercise is a magic bullet for losing weight.
Besides going on a program, follow some strategies for losing weight:
-Drink water when you feel like you want to snack. I have found I sometimes mistake water cues for food cues. When I drank water instead, I discovered I was actually thirsty and didn't realize it. And it has to be water. Not juice, soda, tea or anything else. Nothing takes the place of water. The other options either add lots of sugar or, like diet and non-diet soda, actually dehydrate you as your body metabolizes (digests) them.
-Get out and walk. Since you have asthma you have probably been sedentary-that is-sitting around and not being very active. Walking with a little speed (since you aren't used to it yet) will stimulate your metabolism (which will burn fat faster, like skinny people's bodies do). If you swing your arms as you walk you will burn 42% more calories-a great pay-off for a little more effort. If you have (or can borrow a dog) that will keep you walking at a good rate for about 20 minutes (the pet on a leash) that is helpful and more fun. Or walk with a friend. Or listen to music-make sure it is fast music the whole time. (It is easy to slow down if the music slows down and not realize it.)
Cut out all sugar, sweets, high calorie and fried foods. That will be a huge step towards cutting your calories. Chew gum instead of eating sweets. One way to be successful is to make substitutions instead of stopping something completely. Substitute fruit (don't go overboard and eat six pieces at one sitting) instead of forbidden snacks. Substitute something active like walking or bike riding instead of television and computer games. Buy a camera and walk around your neighborhood or the town and see what kind of photographic vision or talent you have.
One program that is healthy and been successful for a lot of people is the South Beach Diet. Or talk to your doctor and get their recommendation.
Making changes are not easy, but if you really want to be happier when you look in the mirror, make friends more easily, feel more confident, wear clothes better (and shopping is more fun) and feel more energetic, less tired, and more alive your efforts will really pay off and be worh it.
Stick to it. That is the secret.
(And if you blow it one day, don't keep blowing it. Just go back to your healthy plan and keep going.)
Good luck!

First, let's evaluate "extremely overweight". How much do you weigh? To lose weight, it is important to start with your brain. You need to change those thoughts.
Second, you can still exercise with asthma and it's important to keep in good cardiovascular health. Just check out sites devoted to asthma sufferers to find good exercises for you. Adding muscle with help. Muscle has to burn fat to live, so more muscle means your body burns more fat all the time.
Third, no candy, no soda, drink nothing but water and LOTS of it, eat healthy meals with a fruit snack mid-morning and mid-afternoon. Eat foods that are processed as little as possible (i.e. fresh, natural foods NOT McD's). I doubt you'll lose 20 lbs. that fast, but you will get started and develop good eating habits for life.

It is mostly NOT your fault, if you need to lose weight. The way you have been taught to eat is responsible for making obesity the number one health problem in the world (according to Atlantic Monthly magazine) replacing hunger and infectious disease. You need to re-learn how to eat so you can become thin.
Find out about fastest way to lose weight, gradual ways to lose weight, most effective exercise and anti-water. Lose bodyfat and retained water which also makes you a lot fatter (bloated). Plus click on "Pure Water" to make sure the water you drink doesn't hurt you. Most important-- make sure to read the last "fat loss tip", first before anything else, to see the number one food that causes Americans to be fat. Take 3 minutes to read the "advice for teenage girls."

eat small amounts of food. and instead of having three meals a day have 6 small meals through out the day. you haveasthma. do a treatment then run. and if your really desperate don't eat at all. to lose weight you must burn more calories than you eat. so if once a week you dont eat but you exercise that day it might be easier. and to help with your legs ride your bike up hills and stuff or a mile. dont give up. and before exercising do a asthma treatment. dont ride to fast dont run to fast dont eat to much

Start taking walks. I have asthma as well but it doesn't stop me from walking. Also, try not to eat after 7p and that should help too. Incorporate more fruits and vegetables into your diet as well.

Just be more active, don't start starving yourself or anything silly. Eat a nutritious, healthy, balanced diet. 1-2lbs a week is a healthy weight loss.
