I started working at a new job a few months ago where I only work 2.5 hours/day so that I could be home more when I had my daughter. I get paid a high hourly wage, and am considered to be a sub-contractor of a program that works with infants. They do not take any money out of my checks, not for taxes, SDI, or anything. I have the tax thing figured out, but am thinking of having another baby in the next few months and am trying to figure out if there is any way for me to get disability for the 6 weeks afterwards. Since I dont pay into SDI, I'm assuming I dont get state disability like I did last time. Am I correct in this? Is there any type of insurance I can purchase that would cover this? I live in California. Thank you.

I dont know where some of you live, but here in California you get 6 weeks of disability for a vaginal delivery, and 8 weeks for a C-section. You get 4 weeks before you have the baby.

I am surprised at some of the rude responses. I paid into SDI for several years before having a baby, so I deserved the 6 weeks of disability that I received after having my daughter. I have many friends who have had babies and they all received disability as well. To say to leave it to those who really need it is silly, since there a lot of people on disability because they didn't take care of themselves. Poor eating habits and lack of exercise causes many health problems and no one thinks that they shouldn't receive disability when they are taken off work.

AFLAC!

They have a sickness/hospital policy that covers about $2000 when you have the baby, more if you have complications. They also have a disability policy that will cover time off after baby.

*To those of you saying she should not get disability...Since these are self paid policies, no one's tax money pays this disability- the other policy holders do. So don't worry about it... she should and can and you don't have to pay for it!*

You must have these policies in force BEFORE you get pregnant!!

Talk to an agent before you get pregnant, and tell them your plans, they will be able to help you figure out what will be best for you.

Look up a local agent in the phone book.

Unless there was complications, why should you get disability for having a baby? Millions of women do it every day. And like someone else said it was your choice. Even if you can get SDI, I don't think it would be right for you to take it. Unless you had a delivery wrought with complications, Leave it for people who are actually disabled and who can't work. If you want to stay home, fund it out of your own bank account, not the taxpayers.

I've never heard of getting disability for having a baby. Since when is having a baby a disability, that the state pays you for?

I agree with evilest. You shouldn't be able to get it. We have the family medical leave act here which gives up to i think 6 months leave after having a child but you don't get paid for that period

It is your "choice" to have a baby. You shouldn't get any disability what so ever, in my opinion.
